Because apparently you can live through the 20th century from Kennedy onward, and never get a driver's license. (1) Never rented a hotel room, or flew on an airline, or went to a hospital or rented a car or interfaced with police, Social security, any government agency, or bought anything like a new car, house, gun, spray paint, or purchased booze, cigarettes, medical marahoochie, or R rated movie tickets. I admit that there's a potential political Einstein out there who is so sheltered and probably disabled who's in that tiny group, but it's hard to imagine there's very many who are so disconnected from western civilization in the United States that understand any of the issues. Further, She was concerned about Senior Citizen women who were so sheltered their lives by domineering Men that they never got ID. ( and are supposedly incapable of asking for help after their Master has passed on ) (2) And She was very upset about people who couldn't register to vote.. Despite multiple programs where , for example, here, they will come to you and fill out the forms for you, including your ballot. My response that people who couldn't figure out how to vote in the 21st century were people I don't want to anyway was not met with joy.  Fury, yes. 1. true, I know putative adults who can't drive, but most are young and spent the time & money on cars I did on cell phones and Uber. The freedom to travel and get laid that was vital to my generation seems less important when parents don't care if you can smoke pot & get laid in your room? 2. Again, might be a few political geniuses in the tiny group of mentally ill women, and that group does exist. There's more Amish in the Marine corps, I'd bet, but the number isn't zero. | ||

It will be interesting to see whether there is a similar reaction to his latest and much shorter book, "Facing Reality: Two Truths About Race in America." His first truth is that "American Whites, Blacks, Latinos, and Asians, as groups, have different means and distributions of cognitive abilities." Murray makes mincemeat of arguments against IQ tests and shows that they're highly correlated with achievement in schools and in later life. Asians have the highest average scores, followed by Whites, Latinos and Blacks. Murray's second truth is that "American Whites, Blacks, Latinos, and Asians, as groups, have different rates of violent crime." Murray deftly extrapolates from the best available crime rates and shows that average violent crime rates are far above average among Blacks, somewhat above average among Latinos, somewhat below average among Whites and almost negligible among Asians. For many Americans, these are uncomfortable (I have often used the word "unhappy") truths. Blacks are about eight times more likely than Whites (I use Murray's capitalization practice) to commit violent crimes. And I feel a twinge of discomfort in the below-average cognitive ability scores of some of my ancestral ethnicities. Conventional media and academic elites routinely suppress these truths, apparently for fear that ordinary Americans would take them as a warrant for racial discrimination against individuals. To that argument, I reply, as I did in National Review in 1994 and in a Washington Examiner blog post in 2013, that ordinary Americans know better. "They have learned, from school, from work, from everyday life, that there is wider variation within each measured group than between measured groups." They understand that averages don't reliably describe individuals, "that it is irrational to discriminate according to race or religion or ethnic group, and that it is rational to judge individuals on their own merits." Voters who knew that Blacks on average score lower on tests had no difficulty seeing that Barack Obama had the above-average intelligence required for the presidency. Lots of things plot as bell curves. If you take a group, Asians in Detroit, boaters in Florida, the folk on your block, Senators, and give them IQ tests or measure shoe size, each group will show a bell curve if there's enough data points or you crank up the "smooth curve" number in Math Cad. If you then overlay those curves, & squint, it will look like a child's drawing of waves on the sea. Multiple peaks, the same rough shape repeated overlapping. Take all the data and you get a single curve. What's all the "average Asian smarter than average European ancestry" hoo-rah? Honestly, we don't know. The group differences might be cultural, mostly. Recent African immigrants test higher than folk that look like them, but came over more than a century ago. That seems to indicate cultural, not genetic causes. I have little doubt that there's a Darwinian factor, like Chinese that escape the CCP Terror regime might be smarter, and survivors of the WW2 Holocaust, Russian Pogroms, Byzantine mobs, & Arab wars ought to be, ditto. ( but blind chance affects that, if Family A moved to Sweden & Family B was waiting for the kids to graduate school before leaving when the Bad Socialists came to murder them... ) The nature vs. Nurture argument won't be solved unless you take babies from one group as raise them as another. The children of Senators raised in Detroit public schools & The Projects, might score the same as kids there from birth. It's not an easy, or ethical, experiment to do. Most importantly, remember the smartest from any group is smarter than you, and half of the whole are dumber. Plan accordingly.  | ||

If the group differences are cultural, then it would be a mistake to categorise those groups as racial. Race doesn't explain cultural differences. If it did, then Social Darwinism would be a science instead of a pseudo-science. When Communists took over countries such as Vietnam, they used to kill people wearing glasses. The idea was that people with glasses were smarter than people without glasses, so by killing the people with glasses they got rid of a large part of the smart people. These days, Communists don't have to kill smart people en masse. They have found that it is just as effective to call smart people "conspiracy theorists" and cancel them. The more things change, the more they stay the same. | ||

Yes, it does let one jerk hold up the whole process, so one long winded a-thing can prevent vital needed legislation. That has delayed some good things. A racist like Just Joe could prevent civil rights laws from being passed or a Senator from Wyoming keep emergency aid from going to New Jersey. That's a real downside. Otoh, in over 2 centuries, every law that isn't tied to 21st century tech, has already been written. Some really bad laws too. (1) If after 250 years the Congress hasn't made a crime illegal, then the bribes from those criminals to protect them, not us, is making it highly unlikely. And on the gripping hand, there's laws that the criminals bribe politicians to make stuff illegal, so the criminals make tons of money off it. (2) So a LOT of the time, I'm happy if the Congress doesn't operate efficiently and swiftly. Because it reduces their opportunity to screw us. And I'm always suspicious of any claim that X is great even though I'm getting screwed, Now, because when the Other Party takes power, they'll fix everything and Utopia is at hand. Bull. Notes. (1) Bad laws include sending escaped slaves back to their Owners, Prohibition, and a host of racist and sexist crud too long to list. (2) Remember the Columbian Drug Lord who bribed Bill Clinton enough he was invited to stay in the Lincoln bedroom? He wasn't bribing Bill to make cocaine legal.
