Folks, I got a question: after I took out my rear shock absorber, gave it some tlc and put it back in, my starter does not work anymore. Not even the slightest click when I press the starter button. Could anybody point me in the right direction which cable I might have cut or ripped, while I worked on the shock? The battery is fully loaded, all lights come on when I turn the Key, as well did I try to jump the battery. Last but not least I exchanged the Ignition fuse under the seat. Now I run out of ideas ... ;-(( and would appreciate any help. Thx!!! |

# Could be the clutch interlock switch or neutral switch, if trying to start it in gear. # Could be the starter switch. # Could be this wire which gets 12V to close the starter solenoid. I once had it come off and tuck under the starter solenoid, which made it hard to find, (Photo is of S3); ## Try putting 12V on to this connector to bypass all the other switches. If the starter solenoid clicks, then one of those above switches has gone bad or a bad wire.

Following on 89rs1200's info: I had that wire come loose before (my fault), which caused starting issues. Look for it, and pull it free. It is a green wire on my 2002 X1W. Take a multimeter, and turn the ign and stop/run switch on, then press the start switch and look for 12V. If you have 12V there, then the wiring and switches, ect are in good order. Plug the wire in, and try again. I suspect the starter will work. Hope this helps, Dave |

I have a 02 white lighting also. Spent the last week removing a broken exhaust stud. Put the bike back together and took it for a ride with no issues. Went for a ride today and had the same issue. I could hear the relay click but nothing. Removed the fuse box and went thru all my tests. While moving the relay harness I heard the fuel pump kick on. Did a wiggle test and found the tan/green wire for diode 1 was going open in the harness. Probably completely unrelated to my earlier project but little stuff like this can make you head spin. When testing with multimeter it looked good. Just a loose connection to the diode. |

I checked for 12 Volt at the starter solenoid, it is there ... what else could it be? Fact is: after turning the key, the fuel pump starts pumping, the lights come on and everything seems normal until you hit the starter button. Not even a click can be heard ... |

I'd swap the starter relay. If that doesn't change anything, then check both connections to the relay. I assume you have a service manual? |

Or at least check to make sure the relay is getting a signal when the starter button is pressed. I think its terminal 86? You could also jump terminals 30 and 87 to see if the starter motor activates. (Message edited by 34nineteen on May 14, 2021) |
