New to Badweb and new to Buell (2007 Uly) although I had a 1200 sporty for 25yrs albeit carburated. So I'm going to probably beat a dead horse for some of you more experienced guys but here goes.

Bought the bike with 13k miles. Bike ran OK but occasionally rough with CEL coming on. I went through every ground and electrical connection I could get to. Cleaned, retightened, and applied dielectric grease. I bought a Buelltooth and installed ecmdroid. Checked the trouble codes and showed code 14 engine temp sensor. I carefully lifted the rubber boot and checked the sensor and wire all the way to where it plugs in near the throttle body. No wire chafing seen so I left it alone and put everything back. I did not remove the sensor. At this point I decided to do a TPS reset. I backed the idle adjuster out until it wouldn't go any further then did the reset. Afterward the engine cranks but runs extremely rough for 5-10 sec then shuts off. I've tried the reset several times with varying amounts of idle adjustment. I get the same result every time. The longest I've been able to keep the engine running is maybe a minute by keeping revs up around 4k but getting alot of backfire at the same time. No other adjustments done. The numbers all look right on ecmdroid with regard to TPD but it's obvious I have not done it right.

I have read numerous posts here and elsewhere and tried to apply as many of the suggestions as I could. As I said before, the bike was running OK before the reset, not great but OK. Now it won't even run long enough to warm up. Any other suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated?

I found this thread highly useful when indeterminate electrical gremlins crept into my 2008 Uly's behavior after it got drenched. I did the work. No more problems. Of course this could have nothing to do with your current problems. YMMV.

Thanks 2cylinderbill I'm only halfway through the link you sent and starting to look through my scrap pile for cable. The guy I bought it from said it had sat for a few years. No doubt I have not found all the corrosion.

I fixed the problem which was based on one of the tips I had seen posted elsewhere. The solution in my case was to find that spot in the throttle where the butterfly valve actually STICKS in the throat. I had been looking for it to do this before but it never would until now. As described in the post this was the MAGIC location of zero TPD that is necessary to do a proper reset.

Any chance you have a link to the tip? I'm having idle and running issues since my reset. It runs okay but backfires occasionally until hot then it idles around 2500 or higher.

When doing a tps reset you need to make sure the butterfly is clean and also that the screws holding it are not getting loose. There have been some butterfly shafts that have broken due to loosening screws. The weak spot of the shaft is at the threaded screw hole in the shaft. If all is well then the butterfly should stick in the bore when fully closed. Most have found that once it's running and warmed up to do another tps reset when hot. Some said this made it worse but they were in the minority so I'd try both ways to see which worked best. If your idle is above 1050 it will cause a 2000 rpm hang. It will eventually drop back but will hang again when revved. Just set your idle below 1050 and it will stop hanging. One more thing, check for intake leaks before you do anything. You can remove the scoop and cover and have a good view of the intake to head seals. Use Brake clean or WD-40 and spray this area and listen for rpm changes. If you have any your seals are leaking and must be replaced before doing any tuning.

I know it's a pain, but a new O2 sensor will go a long ways in making your bike run perfect. Myself I was chasing around bad idles, TPS resets, everything I could think of trying, even multiple CPUs to get a consistent idle. Finally went in and replaced the O2 sensor, and the fan while I was in there. The 06 Uly runs great once I took it for a 30 min ride.
It's a project, but can be done with off the shelf parts at the auto store. Good luck

I finally got around to modifying a socket for the Engine Temp Sensor. Turns out the thing wasn't even in the hole tight. No wonder it was throwing code 14. I pulled it and tested it with a multimeter. Re-seated it and torqued it to spec, did another TPS reset and it runs perfectly. Just for good measure I did the grounding upgrades suggested by 2cylbill. Thanks to all for the help.
