I was having starter problems recently. Managed to get it out and got it fully refurbished at a local alternator repair shop. Tried to get it back in today. It went in really well, but the gasket fell off and got torn in the process. Will have to go to the dealer to get a new one (or a couple of them). Here is onto my question:

would it make sense to attach the gasket to the inside of the primary case first (instead of the starter) and then put the starter back in? It seems that the contact surface on the inside of the primary case is a lot wider than that on the starter and provided I apply some gasket sealer it would probably stick a lot better and the chances of it falling off (and getting damaged in the process) would be less? Any cons to that approach?

Thank you all!

Hmmm, I must be remembering the Rare-electrical ebay starter debacle where the nose cone would leak primary fluid through he non-sealed bearing in the nose cone.

Ya stick it on with gaska-cinch, a couple dots of RTV or whatever then install the starter. Use a flashlight this time

Use paint masking tape to hold the gasket during starter installation. Loosely attach starter bolts, remove the tape and tighten the bolts.

I used to use sewing thread to hold oil pan gaskets on when leaving the engine in the jeep.

I left the bolts in there and just put the gasket on them.
I still had to do it twice though. I didn't clean out the crap properly and a large grain of sand got trapped in there, causing a leak.
