Yeah, you would be able to see if it was worn, but not how thick the plate was. |

Thanks Guys, Since there are no obvious noises or wierd things sounding in there I think I will leave it until the end of the season. Bike season here ends around the beginning of October, then its just lots of rain and really cold. Bill |

Guys, I've noticed that my M2'99 tends to switch "harder" into 3rd gear than the rest of the gears. I get a louder "click" so to speak, when shifing to 3rd. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to make me worry... (I have gotten a similar sound from 4th and 5th as well, but not as often) Do I need to worry? I shifts perfectly, it never misses but you have to be more distinct (firm) than with your average sushi-box. I have to state that it has been this way for as long as I can remember, but I thought I'd ask... Secondly, does the chain tensioner mentioned in the top of this page fit my bike (39975-90A)? Last Q: I have a "quirky" sound from the secondary trans, the belt, when rolling slowly forward. Not that it really matters, but it is a bit annoying. I cant seem to find any mis-alignments so I'm curious if any of you guys have had the same phenomena and maybe found a cure... Cheers and thanks in advance /Jojje |

I think the part listed above should fit. If you order the part from the dealer, and they look it up, they will probably find that number. F&S Buell here in Dayton did, and any Harley dealer will probably have it as well, I believe it is also upgraded for the sportster. I don't know about the shifting thing. When mine went, I could not easily downshift into first at a stop. I had to get a little speed in whatever gear I was stuck in, then upshift, then downshift all the way through while moving. This started about two blocks from my house, so it was only two or three shifts before I got it home and replaced the tensioner. Don't know about the other noise, is your belt tension good? Make sure you double check it when the belt is good and hot after a long ride. Mine looks scary loose when cool, but after a long ride and hot has a little over 1.5 inches of play under tension. Bill is right ... your original chain tensioner was part number 39970-91. That number has been superceded by 39975-90A. Which actually sounds like an older part number. |

Bull, What kind of belt noise are you hearing? If it is a cracking type of sound, it is probably just the belt. You can try a poly lube that HD sells on the side of the sides of the belt because it may rub slightly against the front pulley. If you are getting a loud whirring sound or a whistling sound, check it asap. I had both of those noises. The whirring was a chewed up front pulley, followed two weeks later by the main and output shaft and bearings gone bad. I hope you just need some lube on the belt. |

Thanks Guys, It is some kind of rubber quirking, so I guess i'll try the poly lube... knock on wood! What do you guys think about the hard shifting?? Maybe Buells are a bit harder in the shifting compared to the sushi-crap that I'm used to, I dunno. /Jojje |

My starter motor fell off! Well, it was coming loose. Don't know if this is the right section but if you're in there anyway, I found there wasn't much locktight on the bolts. I've mentioned elsewhere that I rode 300miles home with the bike spewing a quart every 60 miles onto the back tire. Strangely, it never even squiggled in the corners. And I was doing warp speed for at least 60 miles without being aware of the problem. Go figure. Davet reports that his X1 starter gasket failed. I wonder if it was just loose bolts? Something else to keep an eye on, I'd say. |

Arrghh. Stop it! Stop it! (fingers in ears) I can't hear you... I can't hear you! Bill (leaving this morning for a week long vacation trailering the Buell with minimal tools and noticing yesterday a hint of oil coming from around the starter) |

Sporty -- Both my S1's have wept oil from the starter gasket at one time or another. It's an easy fix, just make sure you have the starter gasket and the primary gasket before you start the job. I clean off the gasket surfaces with lacquer thinner, then stick the new gaskets on with a light coat of Gaskacinch, then torque the bejeezus out of them (according to factory specs, of course). No problemo. Reepi-- Don't sweat it! Oil is cheap! road_thing_the_shade_tree_mechanic |

Just an FYI: Stripe'r was leaking engine oil into the primary, but not through the usual manner. Apparently the nut on the crankshaft had backed off a little and allowed space between the rotor/drive gear and the spacer the primary case crankshaft seal tries to seal apon. This allowed oil to seep between the spacer and the crankshaft. Well bottom line is it was caught in time to keep any real damage from happening and the 2-lipped seal is now in place. While they were in the primary they also replaced the chain tensioner. For 15,000 miles, Stripe'r should be just running stronger and longer. Thanks to the Technicians at Bud's H-D/ Buell, AKA Buell Of Evansville. BTW, they got me in and serviced in 48 hours, without an appointment. Thanks Guys, you da greatest. Neil S. |

Clutch basket and Stator nut sizes, please? I'm at work, want to pick up the sockets on the way home but don't have the size for each. Gonna open up the primary and do a bunch of work (Baker XL smooth shift, 2nd gear update, tensioner, etc). Anyone know those nut sizes? Thanks, AL |

Al; The sprocket shaft is 1-1/8 Deep socket. Aaron is correct on the clutch, 1-3/16. Remember the clutch is LH threads. |

And if you don't have the harley sprocket jamming tool, somebody recommended jamming a towel in there to hold everything down while loosening. |

Thanks Guys! I got the primary off last night, didn't get to the actual nuts yet. I've been runing redline since 2500 miles or so, about 12,500 now. I think I'll switch, that stuff is congealed on a bunch of parts. Maybe the mobil 1 gear oil (75 weight??). Does ANY of this stuff NOT Stink? My wife made me stay away from her last night while I had any redline on me! I know the harley sporttrans stuff stinks worse. Al |

Al: The Mobil 1 smells not too bad, unless you fry the stator. Then watch out. I ran the engine for a few seconds to test the stator output, got none, stopped motor, removed chain inspection cover and got knocked off my milk stool by the most acrid smoke you can imagine. Stunk the entire house up for a week. After 6,000 miles of Mobil 1 all was bright and shiny inside. Look for it with the other gear lubes in your auto parts store. |

Got a 2001 S3 when I start off in first it feels like it skips on the primary chain. I get a LOUD BANG AND THE BIKE seems to hesitate for a second. It is intermittent and I have tightened the primary chain which did not seem to help. Wondering if it a clutch thing or tranny. Only does it in first gear too no other gears. Any suggestions. Thanks |

Empire, How long have you had the bike? Does it have an M6 chain tensioner in the primary? How tight did you tighten the primary chain, per the specs in the book? How tight is your final drive belt? If it's still under warranty, and if you have a decent dealer nearby, take it in and have the mechanic take it for a test ride. Empire: I have the exact same problem. The probem is that the 1st gear shifting dog tips have roughened and when engaded do not fully seat until engine torque is applied. You may smooth them but careful not exceed the case hardening. |

Here is another broken tensioner and grooves warn into the case cover from chain slap, via loose chain. project on hold due to striped primary cover bolt, actually, pulled out threads of eng case during torqing.

Mike J, I have 11,000 miles, no M6 tensioner, tightened primary to 3/8"-1/2" and checked several spots in the chain, not sure on drive belt tension exactly but pretty sure it is up to specs. |

Just curious if anyone has experience with Fisher Dampers or Balance Masters on their bikes? Seriously considering something. I don't know the vibes a driving me nuts! Its not that there terrible at crusing speed(75-85) its going through the towns and intercity rides. Already have Dale Walkers bar snake, bar ends and gel grips and gloves. After 3-400miles I am ready to get rid of it. Help. |

Rippin, You should have almost zero vibration over about 3000rpm. I'm still running the Fisher balancer in my '00 M2 to test it. I haven't been able to put it on the dyno yet, as the shop is closed while he's on holidays. Seat of the pants says I can't feel any difference, except it maybe accelerating slightly slower. Could be the extra weight of the damper, could be just my imagination. If you are getting bad vibrations, I'd be lookng for the cause of it, not trying to offset it with a damper. PPiA |

Rippin, I agree with Peter. The only vibrations I get on my M2 are a slight buzz in the left footpeg. Dive in and find out what's wrong. |

Ditto Leeaw (except I think my slight buzz is my right footpeg). At any RPM where the engine is not being lugged, my M2 is so smoooth it's creepy. That brings up a good question... what do the isolators look like when they fail? Do they split? Collapse? Just stop isolating? How do you inspect them? Bill |

Reepicheep, Look for a steel washer imbedded in the rubber that is exposing itself. My X1 was displaying it at the swingarm end of the isolator. The centerbolt is always off-center, but will be worse if the isolator is tearing. The vibration Rippin is referring to is almost always a sympton of bad isolator(s). SteveH(going to the gap) |
