On the 2000's the rear header goes under the frame. While trying to trace a noise I noticed that there was very little clearance and there was evidence of the header hitting the frame. I measured it to about .030". I loosened off the muffle clamp and with a few whacks of a rubber hammer was able to get the clearance to about .065". I've seen pics where the clearance looks to be about 1/4". Does anyone know what normal clearances should be? | ||

I have a ‘99 S3 and had that same problem. My issue turned out to be bad rear isolators. Now that I replaced them, the gap is over 1/4”. | ||

Newman beat me to it. I was just gonna say that it could very likely be your isolators. As the rubber wears the frame will start to sag down a little, taking the header clearance with it. | ||

I'm sort of suspecting that even though the clearance doesn't change whether I'm sitting on the bike or not. Are the newer upgraded ISO's even still available? | ||

Yeah. New they are are over $100 from SPHD but I pick them up on eBay used when they pop up for about $40-50. The left side can be had on eBay for $37 new but the right side is low stock, and they charge over $70 for it. I’m guessing people replace them when changing belts? Wish it were the old days when both could be had for less than $20. I doubt they ever go back into production. | ||

Turns out it wasn't the ISO's. While installing my new exhaust hanger upgrade kit I noticed that the muffler had been pushed up probably from grounding out on a ramp or something and because of that was jammed up against the engine and the shock. There was actually a flat worn on the body of the shock from rubbing. I've now got my frame gap and solved the mysterious noise. |
