Is there a recommended life limit on drive belts for the tubers? Mine appears to be in good condition visually but is running on 21 years old. I do inspect it fairly often using the rearset stand so I get a good look at it.

Running the original belt on a 97 S1. It doesn't have that many miles on it.
The factory figures 80k to 100k. Mistreated belts since they came out in 1980 haven't broken one yet. While working in an independent shop Iran one on a soft tail that had a hole punched in the center the size of a pencil for 20k sold it with the same belt.
Every other oil change I clean belt and pulleys with mild soap and brush Just watch for cracks.

The older belt will outlast XB belt. I have 40k on my 1995 S2 and that’s with drag racing, wheelies and burnouts. Still looks at good as new, just don’t bend them backwards or twist them.

I have 20k on the original belt on my '99 M2. I just inspected it last week while installing a new rear tire. Looks great, I see no need for replacement. My S1 and S1W both have 15k+ on their original belts as well.

Run it nice and loose and it'll last a long time.

I had 75 to 80,000 on the original belt on my M2. I installed a XB belt on it because I thought I should change it. Still have the old one hanging up for a spare. Wish I wouldn't have installed the XB belt. I skips if left too loose. The belt was designed to work with the idler pulley. Different application means different part.

Good to know. I just gave mine a thorough once-over last night and it still looks good.

46champ, if you do feel the need to swap out your belt you can, if it's slipping it may not last too long, stock belt is still available at H-D as well as plenty of aftermarket options as it is the same belt as the 61 tooth Sportster from 1991 to 2003. Part number is 40022-91, 1-1/8" 128 tooth. Granted the price is still $230 from H-D and S&S, $150 from Drag and $200 from Panther.
