How can the exercising of one right nullify the exercising of another right. Don't take me wrong in this; I believe a person has the right to say what ever hate speech they want to. Just as much as a person can spout off that what the guy said is hate speech. In my mind a man has the inalienable right to his opinion. No matter how correct or incorrect it is. |

I can see both sides, in todays climate. "the suspect had made many posts on social media prior to the shooting..." I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it. However. NOBODY has a "right" in this nation, to force their views on another citizen either through coercion or violence. How DO we draw the line? When DO we say "enough posts are enough" and do some investigating before allowing firearm purchases? I'm going through the process in MD myself right now, to get my HQL. Not expecting any issues, but...it's the process here. And, like getting a drivers license, I can understand having to complete a reasonable amount of testing first. I guess I'm on the fence here. Do I think American Citizens have the right to own a firearm if they so desire? Sure. Do I see the difference between a long gun and a pistol, as far as usage and potential carry-ability in public? Yep. Here in MD, it's a simple questionnaire and if I recall from when I bought my rifle...about an hour wait until the results come back clean, and a rifle purchase is OK'd. And unless I go full-on Highlander with the long trenchcoat...I won't be surprising anyone with my 46" long bolt-action rifle, in public. Nor do I have any intention to do so. Pistol? Yeah...that's a different story. Small-frame carry pistols can be had small enough to palm out of sight, in easy-to-find calibers like 9mm, .45, and now 10mm is gaining popularity. Small enough to palm; small enough to pocket-carry; IWB and SOB holsters are commonplace...so yea, I can see the push to require more testing in order to own something like that. But...where do we draw the line? It's another one of those moving targets - personal liberty versus societal safety. Testing and re-certification? Yeah, I'm good with that. I qualified 4 targets, 250 possible score per target, with (2) 250s and (2) 248s. I'm not worried about testing. Standard criminal background checks? I'm fine with that as well - nothing more than speeding tickets in my past, and I do think that if you're a convicted felon you have foregone your right to bear arms due to your crime. But checking social media? It's a tough call. And the plethora of "the suspect has made numerous posts in the past" lately is what makes me think twice. Should it auto-disqualify someone? Should it bring LEO attention that person, but no restrictions until an investigation? Where do we draw that line? Opinion? Speech? Go for it, give me the chance to agree or disagree with you. Personal (or public) assault? Nah...that's going too far. The trick is, keeping one from turning into the other without surpressing personal liberties and individual freedoms. |

As long as we are putting it out there. I am for no testing. No background check. No permit needed to carry long or short gun concealed or open. Felons after doing their time should be returned to full citizenship. With all the rights. A right and a privilege are 2 different things. Driving is a privilege and you pay for a license and pass a test. There should not be a fee, test, or license for a right. Imagine having to get license after paying a fee and passing a test before being able to use your right to free speech. |

I'm fairly libertarian on gun control laws. If you have me the job of revising the laws for the 21st century, I'd begin with the NFA, go back to 1934, and Keep a few restrictions, like the background check system for 20 mm & up cannons. You want a 88 flak gun of WW2 fame for shooting tin cans? Fine. But I do want to know who has one in case I need to call you to defend against flying saucer attack, or to go ask questions when someone gets murdered by one. Most of the rest of the restrictions I'd toss as unneeded as proven through history. The subject of concealed carry vs. open carry vs. Permits vs. Mandatory safety classes???? There has to be a paradigm shift. A long term propaganda campaign, and I mean centuries, has made fear of weapons worse than ever, deliberately. Insert rant here. To get people to accept you walking around with a pistol openly is going to take cultural change. Keep in mind that while today's snowflake freak out at a glimpse of a holstered weapon is serious, deliberately induced mental illness, it's just an exaggeration of a Roman peasant being uncomfortable with others wearing swords. See the Sheep/Wolf/Sheepdog essay for more on that psychological aspect. As to the subject at hand, my caution at giving the Government cause to judge me by spying on my Twitter idiocy, without any due process or defense, is rational. Will that video I "liked" of that outlaw motorcycle guy in Europe baiting cops on a Hayabusa mean I lose my CDL? Will the Republican County Clerk deny me a building permit because I posted a preference for her Democrat rival? This isn't paranoia. China's Social Credit System is terrifying, and if my text to a buddy or a post on a forum renting about the evil Marxist religions can have the State deny me my rights, it's just a matter of scale, not kind, to have the same totalitarian control. |

I would draw the line at so called destructive devices. They should simply require the same regulation as handling explosives in general. Most people are unaware that handguns were sought to be under the purview of the NFA when drafted. My holster of twenty years for my full size 1911 is falling apart...in six to nine weeks I'll have a replacement. Merry Christmas to me. It'll be this in black.

https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2018/11/w hat_truly_caused_the_pogrom_of_1938.html Mobs assaulting the Enemies Of The People is not new. Never Again has Real meaning. The New Socialist Democrat Party has promised it's followers it will take our guns. This January, as soon as they take over the House. Always, somehow, "their guns", the supporters are never told that they will be restricted too. In obviously "forgot to lie for a minute" moments, a few Progressive politicians have admitted that "assault weapons" and semiautomatic weapons are not the point, just excuses. ( lies ) Disarming the Citizens is the point. Just because the election is over for 2018.... Although the vote fraud & recounts will take time, does not mean the Civil War was cancelled. Oh the contrary, as long as the Socialist Democrat Party isn't in full, no Constitutional limits, power, it is still on. Based on the lessons most have forgotten from the 1930's, the pattern is clear.... It's deja vu all over again. "Military style weapons" for example.... Again, just a step on the path to confiscation and imprisonment of Enemies Of The People. I cannot give advice to do anything illegal. It's against Badweb policy, and a stupid thing to do on a public forum. Not too bright in a Private Message, either, since such communication is not private in fact. Suffice to say, with my limited budget, I won't be buying any guns to Register with any entity in the foreseeable future. I will try not to forget to obey laws to Register the few firearms I still possess in obedient compliance with future "public safety" drives. I'm sure law abiding citizens will also feel that way. Personally I'm going to restore my Father's 1930's Stevens pump .22, and use it for sporting recreational activities. Don't need anything else in my doddering old age. Of topic, arthritis, work related crippling conditions, and age related issues complicate my life. Winters are colder, endurance is down, memory isn't what it used to be. Getting old sucks. Sometimes I wonder The House looking for that book I was reading, ( I usually have 3-5 going at the same time ) only to find I've set it down on the kitchen counter or fridge top, sigh. Come to think of it, I've had that problem for over 50 years. Now, was I reading that book on Northrop flying wing stability, or Hanson's New History of WW2? Or the 3rd Dresden Files, or latest Drake RCN series, or ...... Oh, yeah, all of them. |

The MSM is playing the video of the mom of one of the Thousand Oaks victims saying, "No more guns!" Confiscation from the law-abiding will be very difficult, but even tougher from the criminals who murder the much greater number. |

But, you know...the Left can simply wish guns out of existence. Totally. It's not a matter of law-abiding, or criminal, it's all on the device. The tool. Just like those nasty pencils that misspell words. We need to get rid of those, too. I get the woman's anger and sorrow. But someone should ask her "what if your child was standing next to a friend, who was carrying a legal firearm and could fight back to protect themselves and your child? What if your child had a legal firearm and knew how to use it, and could defend themselves with it?" Getting old sucks. Still beats the alternative.

MD doesn't distinguish between concealed and open - it is simply a "wear and carry" permit. Open = "you are now the primary target", or more likely in today's political climate, "you have started a panic and/or freaked people out". While I personally think that widespread open carry would result in a much more polite society....in reality, I prefer not to have THAT many conversations with the police simply because I have a firearm on my hip. |

New York has 2 levels of permits for hand guns. https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-gun-laws/new -york/ Purchase No permit is required for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun (except in New York City). A license to carry or possess a pistol or revolver is required to purchase a handgun. (See HANDGUNS- POSSESSION and CARRY.) Elsewhere than the City of New York, a person licensed to carry or possess a pistol or revolver may apply at any time to the licensing officer in the county of their residence for an amendment of his or her license to include one or more such handguns, or to remove a handgun held under the license. Possession - Rifles and Shotguns There is no state license requirement for the possession of a rifle or shotgun, so long as the rifle has barrel(s) at least 16 inches in length and the shotgun has barrel(s) at least 18 inches in length. Possession - Handguns A license is needed to possess a handgun. The application is made to the licensing officer of the city or county where the applicant resides, is principally employed, or where his principal place of business as a merchant or storekeeper is located. An alien may obtain a pistol license if he or she meets these requirements. NY Penal Law § 400(3). Carry New York State issues various types of handgun licenses under NY Penal Law § 400.00(2) (e.g., to have and possess in a dwelling by a householder; to have and possess in a place of business by a merchant). Not all license types allow unrestricted concealed carrying. The license must specify whether it is issued to carry on the person or possess on the premises, and if on the premises, it must specify the place where the licensee may possess the handgun. NY Penal Law § 400.00(7). An applicant for a license to carry outside the home must be required to show, in addition to the requirement for possession, that “proper cause” exists for the issuance of a carry license. A person with a Possession Permit may ( usually ) carry the gun locked in the trunk of his car while transporting it to the range for practice and competition. He can technically carry it around inside his house, in a holster, pocket, etc. But it must be stored locked, or in a safe, when not under your immediate control. So, you aren't allowed to leave it on the kitchen table while you sleep at night... Open carry is technically legal in some locations but not in others, but no one with a carry permit not obviously dressed as a security guard or police officer does so, or the screaming and calls to police ensue. Plain clothes police officers sometimes have a badge displayed on the belt next to the holster, for when the jacket blows open. I've heard tales from detectives about causing a panic when they inadvertently flash their guns. It's actually a problem when making a bust in public, as the reaction to an armed man in the sheep population can ruin surprise, or cause public panic and interference with an arrest. |

No disrespect..... Ah, who am I kidding? LOL ...or more likely in today's political climate, "you have started a panic and/or freaked people out". In Indiana, No panic caused. An armed society is a polite society. You will never hear so many "excuse me" and "pardon me" as you do at a gun show here. |

Come to Arizona. We're considered the most gun friendly state in the union. Constitutional carry is real here. Open carry is reasonably common. If you walk into Walmart with a gun on your hip, few will notice and no one will care. It's just that simple. Gun even in the Phoenix metro area are just one part of life. That's part of why I keep coming back. That and the whole no snow thing... |
