Hi all. I'm sick and tired of trying to get the stock carb to behave. Got the bike after it sat for over a year; it was only able to idle (previous owner ran carb cleaner through it to get it to start at all) with enricher fully out, and died if I twisted the throttle. I pulled it apart, cleaned it, reinstalled and the bike was able to run and rev up, but the carb leaked a bit. Got all new gaskets, reinstalled, now the darn bike DOESNT START but the carb still drips (I really don't know where it's seeping from, but I don't think the float is the problem) but I'm reluctant to pay a shop to sort it out when people seem to prefer the Mikuni carb anyway. Are there any cons to getting the Mikuni (aside from spending money, which I would probably have to do on this carb anyway)? How should it be set up if I have a Buell race air filter and Vance and Hines exhaust? Thanks in advance. |

Since it sat for a long time, try pulling the air filter so you can see into the carb throat. Turn the fuel on, and pump the throttle once or twice. You should see fuel squirting from the brass tube in front of the slide. I suspect the accelerator 'system' is clogged. In any case, take the carb off and take it to the shop of choice and have them clean and service it. Be sure to tell them the bike sat for a year or more. Think something in the area of 1/2hr labor plus a rebuild kit. While that is going on, wouldn't hurt to put in new intake manifold seals. They are going on 20yrs old. And check in the B.R.A.N. and see if someone in the area might be willing to help. Hope this helps, Dave |
