my S3 is doing a lot of popping and mis-firing. Seems to be a bigger problem when cold and always occurs between 3000-4000 RPMS. Once the big is fully warmed about after about 10 minutes of driving, it tends to smooth out. seems to be worse after I swapped to a stock exhaust, but I cannot be sure its directly related. I may go ahead and replace the intake seals just to see if that makes a difference. I do not see any obvious exhaust leaks anywhere. Which leads me to my questions. I am not completely sure what map is currently on the ECM. Maybe it was tuned for the Borla that was previously on the bike. What's the easiest way to check what map is on the ECM or does anyone have a stock 1999 S3 fuel injected map that I can re-load. The follow up question is what hardware and software do I need to upload the new map? One that is idiot proof is preferable |

Ecmspy to remap and do tps resets. It’s not very user friendly IMO. I posted the Dropbox link with stock and race maps to your post on Facebook. They say X1 but they are the same for the S3. |

Have you done a TPS reset? |

If the issue started when you messed with the exhaust, start there. What is connected to the exhaust? the oxygen sensor. Make sure that the exhaust is on there tight since the sensor needs to be grounded to work. Also, check that little wire that comes off of it. Oxygen sensors only work when they are hot. Car sensors tend to have more wires going to them since that have a built in heater. Ours is the much simpler one wire flavor that depends upon the exhaust to heat it up. Is it possible that the header on the rear header is letting air in when the bike is cold? |

Also make sure you used (if you used any) sensor-safe thread sealer on the O2 sensor. You did do the TPS reset with a hot engine, yes? How are the plugs? If there's a noticable flow difference between what you took off and the stock exhaust, your plugs will likely be sooting up from running rich. Free-flow exhaust requires more fuel; stock exhaust will "cork" the airflow by comparison and the same fuel levels will be too rich. |

Somewhere on Badweb I read once, "Unless proven otherwise, its the Head Temperature Sensor.". I've done 2 on my 02 S3 over the years. Is it throwing any codes? |

good advice everyone. I have a Bosch O2 sensor sitting on my bench, new in package. I will go ahead and put that on there to see what it does. TPS was reset last summer while engine was hot. No codes are being thrown. Well, check engine light isn't going on anyway. My next step is to pull plugs and check them out, then probably replace the intake seals. Won't hurt to do it. I wonder if the ECM was flashed for the borla? Could be that the ECM needs to be re-flashed to stock. I don't particularly want to drop the coin on buying a buelltooth device, paying for the ECMSPY software and trying to procure a windows laptop (I only own apple devices). Wish there were an easy and cheap way to see what map is installed on it? |
