A week ago my taillight failed. Not a burnt out bulb, somehow everything in one bulb shorted straight to ground and blew out the fuse. Since that night, my instrument fuse keeps blowing, my tachometer doesn't work, and I've lost the idiot light cluster. I pulled the wires from the tach, thinking it might have been fried, but the fuse still blows and the idiot lights still don't work. What else is on this circuit on a '99 S3? What can I bypass to restore my neutral lamp and oil pressure warning? |

i think the whole rear lighting harness has a connector. if it does id undo it. reinstall fuse and see if it still blows it |

The lights work again, it's the accessory fuse that blows. Far as I can tell, it only lights up the idiot lamps and the tachometer. |

FWIW, re a brother from a different mother . . Had a situation with my X-1 where the instruments would get wonky and/or die. A fuse might blow, might not. While trying to find the issue, I noticed that the branch of the wiring harness that feeds the turn signal flasher and the rear brake switch was routed across the top of the oil tank in such a way that it had a sharp, almost 90deg bend in it. Rerouted the branch to remove the sharp bend and the problem went away. May be something to look for while troubleshooting. Hope this helps, Dave |

Actually, it's the instrument fuse. Thanks, Dave, I will check that cable out. |
