Hi, I'm new to the board but I've had my 99 M2 since 2007. The bike was all stock when I got it and had been sitting for a couple years. All I did was change the fluids, front tire and battery and rode it pretty infrequently for a couple years. In 2012, the crank seal let go, overfilled the primary, and puked all over the rear brake. Since then, the bike has been sitting, with the primary drive and clutch basket off. I did have the primary cover on the bike all this time to keep it from getting all dirty inside. I recently started putting it all back together and want to know what I should be checking out or replacing before I start riding it again. The bike has about 8,800 miles on it right now, and nothing else seems obviously wrong with it. |

All of it. Rocker box gaskets. Pushrod base gaskets. Stator wire gasket. Fuel vent tube. Exhaust studs (at the exhaust ports). Carb jets and float needle. Brake fluid. Clutch cable lube. Tires. Fork seals. And, if it's been on the sidestand, check the output shaft bearing. Sidestand means fluid drains away from the bearing, and it can lock up. DAMHIK (2006, on an 1100 mile 98 S1W, my output shaft - and thus, the rear wheel - simply locked up). The bike's worth it - my first bike was a 99 M2 - but if you're gonna do it, do it right. If the seals and gaskets don't leak now...they will within 100 miles. Have them on hand for when they leak. |

Thanks Ratbuell. Is there a certain way I should check the output shaft bearing or should I just make sure it's not locked up? |

I guess you could replace the spring plate in the clutch pack too while it's out, too. |
