I have a 2009 XB9SX with 14k km.
The bike keeps thinking it's running rich and leaning out the mixture to the point of knocking. I got the bike a year ago with 10k km and unknown history and the issue has been there from the beginning.

With AFV reset, it will set it to ~85 in a single ride. If it goes under 95 the bike starts acting up and soon becomes unrideable. With "AFV minimum value" set to 95, the bike handles good when riding, but will show EGO correction ~90-95 in idle and exhaust headers will start turning red in about a minute after startup (indicating very lean mixture).
I've replaced O2 sensor, spark plugs and wires but to no avail.

What could cause the bike to think it's running rich and leaning out the mixture to the point of knocking?

Had the same thing happen to my '01 X-1, though not as severe. On my bike, the 02 sensor is on the rear cyl. The rear fuel injector was leaking or 'drooling', causing the rear cyl to run rich. The 02 sensor read the rich mixture and leaned out the AFV to the high 80's, low 90's. Replacing the rear injector solved the problem.

I believe there is an at home check in the service manual to check for a leaking injector; you will need a strong light and have to take off the airbox cover and air filter.

Hope this helps, Dave

Found it. From my '08 service manual -

Remove the intake cover assembly.
Remove the air cleaner cover.

Turn on the key, then turn the stop/run switch on for 2 seconds. Turn off for 2 seconds. Repeat 5 consecutive times. Open the throttle and look in the intake manifold for raw fuel. Replace injector(s) if any raw fuel.

Hope this helps, Dave

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, i tried the inspection procedure a few weeks ago but the results were inconclusive - it's really hard to see if anything changed since my manifold is a bit oily/mucky from inside.
In about half the tests, i did smell more gasoline in intake.
I will try to find new injector(s) and see if this helps.

Remove and Clean your Iac port and both sides of your throttle body butterfly. Reset AFV to 100 and perform a tps reset for 08. Make sure the black rubber cap is still on and covering the port on the throttle body.use a clean lint free cloth when cleaning the throttle body I use Q tips and throttle body spray cleaner. 85 is a lean condition so the ECM will increase injector pulse which means add more fuel.

Check your plugs what color are they also the old O2 sensor what color was it. You can also read it like a sparkplug. Causes of lean condition could be Dirty or stuck open Iac, Clog fuel filter weak fuel pump, Exhaust gasket or crack Exhaust pipe before O2 or loose O2 sensor. If idle is bad leaking intake seals.leaking intake seals causing bad idle would go away as manifold pressure rises or throttle is applied.Reset AFV to 100 and reset TPS after repair

Haven't had time to ride in last few months, but the problem still persists.

I replaced injectors, checked and cleaned throttle body but to no avail.

Idle is stable.
I've reset AFV to 100 and reset TPS after every change/procedure (also temporally removed "min AFV" restriction to verify the problem persists).

Spark plugs and O2 sensor are visually all over the place - showing signs of both - running rich and lean

If there was a leak in exhaust - shouldn't O2 read as lean? (at the moment it's reading rich and leaning out the mixture)
If there was a leak in intake - wouldn't O2 read as lean?

Yes to your above question, check your ECT sensor and Iat sensor per service manual

Ect sensor can be removed with a 1/2 inch socket deep well with about a 1/8" slit cut up side of it to allow for wire.

Some Causes of lean, intake seal leaks, weak fuel pump, clog fuel filter, bad ecm, exhaust gasket leak before O2. Loose O2 sensor. Silicone contamination to O2 sensor. Faulty injectors.

When you start your bike the bike will be in open loop(o2 sensor not sending info to ecm.when the O2 starts sending info to the ecm. The bike is in close loop. From the info above you claim.the bike is running fine except after a minute or so after start up. Doe the cherry red pipes go away after start up and when riding.

Some causes of Rich condition can be caused by defective fuel pressure regulator, air temperature sensor, defective TPS
