how can you adjust the primary chain? is it normal for the chain to have more slack on the top and less at the bottom when you are pushing the chain? can anyone also tell me how much free play do you need when you are pushing on the chains to the upward and downward. |

1/4" to 1/2" freeplay from the factory. 3/8" to 1/2" freeplay set by hand. Put the bike on a stand, engine in 5th gear, remove the inspection cover and freeplay is the difference between pushing down and pushing up on the chain. Rotate the engine by turning the rear wheel and check the chain at multiple points to ensure you measure the chain at its tightest point (it should be 3/8" freeplay with a warm engine). Loosen the locknut on the adjuster on the bottom of the case and turn clockwise to remove slack. Lock it with the nut and check again as it will change some with the bolt under tension. xbolt12 |

I thought the way you check it is to have the gears on neutral? |

I put that bad boy on 5th gear and the wheels doesn't move.... again to my question is it normal for the chain when you push it up to have a lot of slack with it? |

put in fifth, pull spark plugs...with the tranny engaged you have to rotate the entire engine of course, so it takes a little muscle. Pulling the plugs will keep you from working against the compression stroke! and yes the slack will be when you push up on the chain. normally gravity pulls the chain down so you won't have any slack pushing down... From having had my primary apart a lot lately, the first problem I could see having the chain too tight would be the excess stress on the clutch hub needle bearings. |

What wycked said, and excessive wear on the chain and sprockets, and it might shift really goofy. Set it to 3/8" to 1/2" when cold. You'll be fine. |
