Sometimes my clutch will slip when shifting hard. Could this be too much oil in the primary or my clutch plates just need replacing? X1 motor with 35k miles? |

Sounds like clutch plates. Not sure how long a clutch is supposed to last in your Buell but if you got 35k out of it, you did well. |

Make sure you have it adjusted properly. Free play in lever, and cable lubricated. |

I would be worried that it wasn't the clutch. My X1 used to hop in second gear. It was rounded dogs. Later, I was getting a slippage and a hop and it was due to running an XB belt too loose. It was jumping teeth. I later found this out when it scraped all of the teeth from the belt! You're not using some odd oil in your primary, are you? Modern oils use all sorts of bad stuff to enhance their lubricating qualities. This is why I always run the H-D recommended primary juice. So yes: Make sure your cable and rampy thing is adjusted just right And make sure you're using formula plus or whatever they call "sport trans" nowadays. |

Most oils are ok as long as they have Friction enhancers for the Clutch.I use Mobil-1(75-140) synthetic gear lube. |

Redline 20/50 is fine. Never use redline shockproof heavy. Your stator will thank you. |

I drained the 20/50 redline and put the popular Mobil 1 75w90 slight cable tightening so far so good. I hoping to milk this till I have a garage again. Thanks all ! |

FWIW, sportrans is hydraulic fluid, not gear oil. And the factory recommended fill is now motor oil, not gear oil. |

Jeff you are correct but i've been using gear oil for the last 15 yrs.No trouble. Anyway it must have FRICTION ENHANCERS for wet clutch. (Message edited by ebutch on September 24, 2017) |

One other thing to be very careful of is the alternator is living in there. If you put something in there that eats the insulation off of the windings, you're in for some serious trouble. |

Me using gear oil = harder cold weather start-ups but not really. |

I'm having what seems like the same problem. Only in 2nd gear, only when running hard and only when rpm are within 5000 plus. Does not feel like trans. almost like a efi miss? |

If engine runs but you don't that is the clutch slipping. Try changing the primary oil else the plates need changing. |
