In a couple of months I'm going to get the engine rebuilt, does any one have a reference number for a set of gaskets (if possible cometic) also does any one suggest a change of pistons, any recommended? The bike has 17.000 miles, it's just it sweats a bit, and mean while I can put the berilium oil pump gear, XB rocker box covers. |

Beryllium? I thought it was bronze. Beryllium is toxic and not very strong. If your piston skirts aren't scuffed, and they're not out of round, you should be able to reuse them, assuming you don't have to overbore. Why are you rebuilding after only 17k miles? |

The oil pump performance replacement drive gear is bronze. |

The bike runs fine , but I a pair of stage 1 ported heads, and I also want to change the oil pump gear, why not upgrade with new gaskets, and make the bike all fresh. So while at that could upgrade pistons, so some one can some one recommend gaskets and pistons? |

I wasn't real impressed with the cometic base gaskets. My kit was missing one and I called them to ship another and gave them my cc and told them to send it first class no rush. It came priority and I had a $23 charge to my cc for one base gasket. Not happy about that. I wound up buying some other coated metal on eBay and using those. I'd suggest getting a pigtail kit from lance at stpaul hd while you have it down. |

Sorry for my ignorance, what is a pigtail kit? |

They go on the oil returns at the cylinder bases and help prevent base gasket leaks: https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.co m/products/cylinder-oil-passage-drain-tube-kit-als o-lnown-as-pig-tails-l3e5 |

My 2 cents. Did something similar, and used a Cometic gasket kit. I could NOT make the rocker box upper gasket work with the XB rocker boxes, 2 sets of gaskets, multiple attempts, Yamabond type stuff, NO luck. Finally bought a pair of HD gaskets, worked first time. Your results may differ. |

Same experience. All the gaskets that came with my 1250 kit fit, but I had to upgrade the rocker covers. I did like the ease of torquing the heads with their gaskets. Use a regular torque wrench. Two years and no base gasket leaks, but I'd have installed the pigtail kit if I'd known about it back then. |

Hoot, What's the difference between the kit you posted and this one? http://www.cometic.com/i-24866735-harley-davidson- evolution-sportster-1200-top-end-est-gasket-kit-3- 500-bore.html?ref=search:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cometic. com%2Fsearch.html%3Fq%3DC9763 I am having my head welded by the old NRHS out in Colorado and want to make sure I get the correct kit. I did some research and this one seems to be correct also. What am I missing? |
