Hey guys,

Can someone help me find out the build info for this bike? My friend just bought this '96 S1, and we are trying to figure out the original colors of the frame and body, plus any other info we can get (orig dealer, build date, etc).

VIN 4MZSS11J4V3200543

Thanks in advance!
William

You will need to get ahold of Court he might be able to get what you need but the vin reslly does not give the color
Look under the seat and look at the rear mount where the gas tank is bolted down you should beable to tell if it has new and old paint colors

Another member saw this and was able to help me fill in most of the blanks.

Built in '96, it's a '97 MY.
Billet Metallic color (and titanium was the only frame color that year).
PM wheels
Original dealer was Spitzie's HD in New York.

I'm going to try calling HD to see how many were made in that particular color (they were able to tell me on my '03 XB, so hopefully they can say about this one).

Thanks!

Lance Krugler at St. Paul HD can print you down a dealer data sheet with the VIN.

And the report will indeed include the original color, order date, build date, shipped date, wheels and any "exceptions"

This is from the FACTORY BUILD SHEET

This is the DEALER INFORMATION SHEET that Lance has access to.

I hope this is of help.

Is that stuff a hassle for you to get? I'd love to see the history on my bike, but not if you guys have to go through a bit of work to find it.

I don't know if it's a hassle but Lance has been kind enough to send me info on two different bikes.

Got some more info on my friend's bike.

Of the 1765 total S1s for 1997, there were 473 in Billet Metallic (49 state bikes) and 42 'kit bikes' in B.M. for California.

What is a " kit bike ".?
Page 62 in your book 25 Years of Buell? Or are you just being facetious?

So far as I know the "Kit bikes" were all earlier- that was how the Westwinds were sold into the state.. By 1996 you could actually just go into a California dealership and buy a Buell. California bikes get broken out as the VIN sequence denotes "49 state" or "California" but they were all complete motorcycles.

Buell got CARB (California Air Resources Board) approval late into the 1995 S2 run.

From what I've read, the Westwind kit was not that hard of a "kit" to assemble. It was something like three parts: motorcycle shaped object, left mirror, and right mirror. Put the parts together and it becomes a motorcycle.
