I looked at a '98 S1 today, I'd say "good" condition, she's not winning any beauty pageants. 15k on the odometer, thunderstorm heads, rear shock isn't leaking, WP forks seemed free of issues, iso's all looked good. Only issue I did notice was leaky front rocker box, and she could use some tlc. $2500 would get me the bike. Seem fair? |

Yup. Rocker boxes are easy. |

Sounds like a great deal. I bought my 97 for $2500 with plenty of issues and I had to drive 8 hours round trip to get it. In all honestly, plan on spending a little more money on it, unless the bike had an awesome previous owner, it's probably going to need some parts that you won't notice it until you've owned the bike for a little, but that's to be expected for a 20 year old bike. I only say that because I've had my bike for a year now and it seems like I'm always browsing for one part or another. My bike had bad isolators and a leaky fork seal, so that was some money right off the bat it sounds like you won't need. It also had a warped rotor, bad brake pads, a front master cylinder that sticks, all things I didn't really catch until I got the bike home. There's also a couple internal engine parts that are recommended, like the upgraded primary chain tensioner, oil pump gear(do that when you change your rocket box gaskets!!), replacing the spring plate in the clutch... those might've been done already, but you won't know 100% until you have the bike at home in your garage. Other than that... sounds like a great deal for an S1, that sounds like a white lightning/S1W. Make sure you post up some pictures if you get it, or before if you want us to take a look over it to see if there's anything we catch that you didn't. |

I've seen better deals, but I wouldn't run away from that price if its clean. Especially if it is a S1W. I traded something to get my S1, but what I traded was worth about that. I have since put a lot of $$$ into it for things that needed addressed or updated. I'm not sorry about it as I love the bike, but I wish I knew more about what I was looking at when I originally bought it. I probably would have held out for a S1W with a better maintenance history. |

If the body work was original and in nice condition, I would try not to break my arm getting the money out of my wallet for that price. You probably won't find a buell of this vintage that doesn't need any work, but that's part of the fun |

I agree, this bike is more work than some others I've owned, but none of it is hard, it's just 20 year old bike stuff. Given a second shot, I definitely would've asked for more/better pictures, and taken a more thorough test ride, but these bikes are getting rare and hard to come by, so you've gotta take what you can get. Yours definitely sounds like a deal though, and I'd just on it, remembering that there'll probably be a few more expenses as time goes. |

I paid $2900 for an S1W that needed everything. Ended up doing a frame off to get it the way I wanted it. IMHO: Anything in a tuber under 3K, deserves a closer look. Get em while you can.
Just gave her a bath last night. Sorry couldn't resist... (Message edited by kc_zombie on August 28, 2017) |

I paid $3200 for my S1W and a 8 hour drive there and back. 35k miles on the clock. He had it listed for $4200. I saw it and pointed out a several things and talked him down. Came with all the original parts, cf rear license hugger, ss exhaust, even the mirrors. It needs intake seals badly, both rear isolators are busted, the primary tensioner, oil pump gear, other smaller things. The paint looks good in photos but has a lot of touch up and could use repainting, the guy even had a complete set of decals. I haven't gotten around to it yet, been busy finishing up my S2. I bought it because, as was said, how often do they pop up for sale relatively close to you.
