 Ok, so I finally got my s2 on the road. I put the "bend" in my kickstand with a torch and some tugs. Anyway. The stock spring was stretched a bit when down, then wouldn't pull the stand all they way up. Too long of a spring I say, so I order one for an 80s Sportster that is slightly shorter. This spring really stretches out when down and pulls the stand up half ass like the stocker now and bounces off the pavement in left hand turns. Any ideas? | ||

When I bent mine I bent it down and slightly forward and the original spring still works fine | ||

Hmm, I was afraid of that. Maybe I went too aggressive with the bend. | ||

I cold bent mine on a hydraulic shop press. Entire job took about a half hour to get it bent the way I wanted it. I also bent it down slightly so the bike didn't lean over so far. It is so much more reliable than it was when stock. With it bent forward of the pivot the bike has to lift its weight slightly to the right in order for the stand to swing past the pivot. No more worries about falling off the stand while idling and warming up. | ||

I agree, they work much better once bent as you have it. I cannot imagine what the designers had in mind when they made them straight in the first place, they were an accident waiting to happen | ||

Mine is bent almost identical but my spring looks to be different than the end on yours. I'll try to get some photos of it tomorrow. I picked up some springs from lowes to try also. My spring looks like the second photo.   | ||

Ok. Got some photos of it. I put the lowes spring on and it works but I'd prefer a stiffer shorter spring with a longer neck. I may look at ace hardware. Anyway. Seems to tuck ok for now but doesn't take much pull to get it down. I did the pocket fill with jb weld to start. It would still push off the lock without an over center, so I dremeled it out and did the bend instead.     | ||

With the foot of the stand bent so it is 3-4 inches forward of the pivot it will not roll off any easier than a billion other motorcycles made with similar geometry on their kickstands. The farther forward of the pivot the foot is, the more weight has to be lifted off the stand for it to be able to retract. I would not be comfortable with any kickstand that had the foot directly below the pivot unless it had a built in lock like a traditional Harley big twin stand. But then that is just me. | ||

Mine still gets light on the stand if I prop it up slightly downhill. Don't do that. | ||

If it'd make any of you guys feel better, I found this little brake locks on ebay for about $7 shipped, search for "motorcycle brake lever lock". It's just a small plastic clip that slides on your grip and hooks over the brake lever. It's not the theft deterrent type, it appears to be more of an emergency/parking brake. If you bike rolling off of your sidestand it's an option to keep your bike from rolling. Same idea as leaving your bike in gear when you park, just without the weight on the transmission. I thought about grabbing one so my bike could idle and warm up a little while I put my gear on without concern of it rolling away. It would also be nice because my parking spot is on a hill, but I unfortunately can't trust passer-bys not to touch things that aren't there's, so I'll just continue to park and leave it in gear so it doesn't go anywhere. |
