Thought I'd post this for reference. Pulling the cam cover to put on the updated oil pump gear. Open the timing cover to find all the hermetic goop from inside the timing pickup oozed all over. I ordered another from drag specialty, they seem to make good components. It was working fine but I'd get the occasional hard start.

Common issue on Sportsters and Buells with cam sensors.

When I put the new sensor on, how do I adjust the timing in ecmspy? The manual says to set tdc in the window and adjust the plate for 5.0v. Just have to find it in ecmspy.

To check the timing on my X-1 ;

Pick the rear wheel off the ground.
Plugs out and trans in 5th gear.
Rotate the engine by hand until the front cyl is on the compression stroke.
Pull the inspection plug at the base of the cylinders.
Rotate the engine until the TDC mark shows in the window.
When the TDC mark gets to the center of the window, the fuel pump will 'fire' when the timing is correct.

Hope this helps, Dave

Last year I had random starting issues with my 99 S3.

Sometimes when hot, some times when cold.

I'm pretty sure it was a fueling issue as after much cranking I never smelled gas.

Could it be the cam sensor?

Thanks,

Scott

Do you have the Drag Specialty PN or is there a better option?
