Hey Guys, New to Buell and this is my first Sports bike. Last bike was a custom 1980 Honda GL1100 Goldwing that I built. This is a whole new animal. A few more CC, 150 lb lighter and basically no limit on the top end! SO.. I've been in a world of naturally aspirated carbonated opposable 4 cylinder engines for the past 6 years. What good advice can you give me right off the bat!? Some things I've noticed so far is that it looks like there is some oil coming from the rear cylinder head? Head gasket maybe? Also the breather filter from the airbox is missing and the hose is just dangling down in front. Looks like the air filter hasn't been changed in a while. Everything else looks great. Clean title, new inspection, tires are new, Oil changed prior to purchase. sounds great. runs great. Feels great. 15000 miles on it. I saw something about adjusting the suspension for my stats? I can't put my feet flat and i'd like to lower it. Is that possible?

I have a 77 GL1000 in the garage that lives next to my XB. Carb work on the GL1000 is a nightmare, if you've worked through Randakk's kit, you won't be too intimidated by much on this bike. The oil you're seeing is likely due to a leaky rocker box cover. You can search for how to rotate the engine in the frame, then it's pretty easy to replace the gaskets. These have a computer on board that takes care of fuel injection. You can buy a Bluetooth dongle online and download Ecmdroid on your phone and you'll have a powerful tool for diagnostics and loading maps. XB's have a timing adjustment that will look familiar, but without the second movable plate. You'll find information about suspension tuning in the service manual, I'd buy a copy. When you do the rocker boxes, yank that header off and have it ceramic coated. It looks like someone had it wrapped, and for $150 it can look like new. |

Check the "77" connector. It is located under that black plastic front pulley cover, it is a two pin connector. This connector attaches the voltage regulator to the battery, and is a known weak spot on 03-07s. The pins don't make good contact, and eventually it arcs and melts the connector, and then your battery stops charging. Simply inspect the connector, if it looks fine don't worry about it, if it looks melted, you can replace it. Harley has an upgraded connector kit, or you can just splice on some marine grade connectors.

Would recommend buying a Buelltooth (google it, website also has many FAQ's to your questions about what is/isn't possible) or old school USB ECMSpy cable... I have both. Resetting the TPS is routine maintenance on these motorcycles for example, and is done with ECMspy or ECMdroid. Only advice I have is same for any used motorcycle. Check it over carefully, assume the previous owner did zero maint. IE: primary tension, fluid... yada yada. Look at the belt closely too, the pics not close up but am I seeing your belt fray a bit? I had been out of the Buell game for 7 years and bought my '04 XB12R with only 4200 miles...... it still had, what appeared to be, the factory oil filter on it. |
