A week ago I noticed my speedo was oscillating Riding at 60 m/h it would fluctuate, going up to 90 or the falling to 40, it's a constant fluctuation, doesent matter the gear or the speed it wont show the speed, what do you suggest, is it the speedo or the sensor on the the engine?. Thanks |

I doubt it's the sensor. I can see it dropping signal, but not adding it. Besides, those usually either quit working entirely in a benign sort of way, or they quit working and blow your ignition fuse. |

If the connection is loose, it could vibrate at a higher frequency than the actual signal I suppose. Next time it does that, pull in the clutch and allow the engine to idle to see if it stops doing it. |

If my X-1 experience is any guide, I would install a new speed sensor. My speedo did something similar, then seemed to cure itself. Much later, it did fail and blow the ign fuse, like Hootowl mentioned. The service manual suggests checking for a loose connecting screw to the speedo wires at the back of the speedometer. If they are all tight, there is a speedometer performance check that a dealer can do, to confirm the speedometer is functioning correctly. Hope this helps, Dave |

My Ulysses has done that when the sensor gets dirty. Drops and jumps are not unusual when the sensor's magnet gets "incorrect" signals, whether internal problems or metal debris problems. I've also had mechanical (front wheel speed sensor / cable drive) speedos do that - the cable can bind (speed drop)...then pop loose (speed jump). Then the cable breaks. "uh...no, officer, actually I DON'T know how fast I was going..." |

I was wondering if the US speedo clock is different from the euro one as the gears are different: US 27/61 and Euro is 29/55, the speedo or the sensor is different? |

Has to be the speedo, or the speedo programming. The sensor just reports the gaps, and those are fixed, with one of the gaps being wider than the others. |

I think it would be loose connection or ground connection loose. as like has been stated if sensor it would just stop working. as for difference in US gearing to Euro, my M2 is euro but has US gearing & speedo works fine ( just KPH not MPH ) i think would be a programming change but guessing. as pick up in gear box ( loved the old front wheel speedo drives as could change drive ratio to adjust speedo & gearing changes to the bike did not effect speedo. |

I had a shortish ride today and the speedo worked fine, I will check any how to see if there is any cable loose. |

Perhaps an auxiliary ground wire to the body of the speedo? Somehow current is being interrupted. |

Did another ride problem was back so I changed the speedo and put some dielectric grease on the screws, let's see this week end if it works ok, or I need to trace the issue, not that it bothers me much. |

Second speedo same issue, it seems it's getting worse, so I guess it's the sensor. |

Or perhaps the wire from the sensor to the speedometer? |

An odd experiment to try: Get it running and slowly increase the RPS while stopped. See if there is a "sweet spot" that makes the speedo twitch. If so, now you have to find what's loose. I'll be the first to say that this is a loong shot but if it turns out you can recreate the error in the garage, it would greatly ease the debug. |

Finally it was the sensor, had a rubbed wire and with vibration it was causing all the issues. |

Those intermittent issues are a bear to find. Glad you did. |

The sensor is magnetic. pull the sensor and wipe the metal residue off and reinstall it. |
