Do I need motorcycle inspection before applying for temporary plate? I think no but want to make it sure. Another question is that owner and driver can be different? I am going to buy a Sportster in Delaware with no plate and driving it to Wisconsin where a friend of lives. He is almost the only one who can help me have it registered. | ||

Will you have the title? If so no problem driving as long as its insured. And Wisconsin has no inspections | ||

To be clear, I live in Korea, planning to have a motorcycle in US, fly once a year to US, ride it a week or two and get back to Korea. I will have to let my friend own the bike because I cannot show them proof of residence in US. Another problem is that he does not ride a bike and does not have motorcycle drivers license. So plan is he owns the bike and I drive it. I wonder if it is practically possible "within about 10 days" to buy a used bike, have it inspected (if necessary) and fixed (used bike usually needs some kind of care), get a plate, drive it to his residence state (Wisconsin) and find a long term storage service. Is it workable plan or something that cannot be done practically? | ||

I think your only snag would be if the bike was bought at a dealership (of any kind). They might be required to have you register the bike on site. But I could be wrong. The only other issue I could see if your buying from an individual would be getting pulled over on your way back to Wisconsin. While the po po might just let you off with a verbal warning, it could get messy if they require you to make an appearance. Wisconsin does require insurance but you don't need to show proof to register the vehicle. At least I didn't last week while registering an endure. They also don't look to see if you have a motorcycle endorsement on your license. Long story short...yeah, its practically possible. | ||

I used Haulbikes for motorcycle shipping. Based in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Excellent care and reasonable pricing. If possible, have a BadWebber occasionally fire up and ride said bike. That way you will have a running bike when you come over. And, don't forget the battery tender! | ||

I will try to locate a good used one from a private seller, have a temporary plate and pick it up to drive it to wherever my friend lives. No, I will never drive it without legal preparation. In case I cannot drive I will use shipping service. Not sure if I can find anyone willing to fire it up and take care of it occasionally. That is something I figure essential. | ||

Save yourself some hassle and find a bike in Wisconsin. There are plenty of good used Buells around. | ||

If you follow through on your plan, you will be paying rent on some storage every month, insurance fifty-two weeks a year, and registration fifty-two weeks a year for two weeks of riding. Or your friend will eventually sell the bike you have registered in his name. A three thousand dollar bike will cost you its original value every two to three years. You will be committed to beginning your annual ride in the same place every year. Your bike will require regular attention even if ridden rarely, either hired while you prepare for vacation or consuming the first half of your vacation. If you want to ride a Sportster two weeks out of the year, it makes a lot more sense to rent a new one each year. | ||

Renting a Sportster for a week at Hals HD is $688. Yeh, it is a lot cheaper than what I thought. Yes renting makes a lot sense. I agree with Hearleyelf. Still, I cannot give up owning a used Sportster for personal reason. I will rent one as you have suggested and at the same time will look around for a good used one. It sounds like a lot of this depends on having a good friend where you want to keep the bike. If you're renting a storage space, the money will add up over time. If you have a friend who will let you keep the bike in his garage and ride it occasionally, it's really not going to cost you a whole lot. I know if someone told me they bought a bike, need a garage to keep it in, and someone to ride it every so often, I'd be perfectly happy to have one more bike in the garage that I could ride on when I wanted a change. | ||

Does Wisconsin allow a driver to be insured on anything he drives, rather than requiring each vehicle to have its own policy? California does, but it's horribly expensive to become an insured driver. I'd hesitate to pay for 365 days of insurance knowing I was only going to use ten of them. | ||

He could at least do a seasonal policy, they go from easter to thanksgiving, or something along those lines. Now that you can register vehicles online and get insurance in 10 minutes online, I'd say the other option would just be to leave it uninsured in his garage, when he's coming into the country he could register it and sign up for insurance online, print all the information the day before and be good to go. He could call and cancel the insurance when he was leaving town. That would likely get the registration canceled, but that's not a huge deal if it's not being parked on the street. That'd be great to have one general insurance policy. I never understood why you have to pay extra to insure 5 bikes over 1. No matter how many bikes I have, I'm still riding the same number of miles back and forth to work. 5 times as many bikes would only mean each one would get ridden 20% of what it normally would. | ||

Couple of things: Haul bikes is great. Good price, fast service, most drivers ride and appreciate the machines they deliver. US residence: All you need in most states to prove residency, is a letter from "anyone" indicating you pay rent. Some states require utilities or something like that for proof, but there are ways around it. I also agree with the costs associated with the motorcycle. Factor in registration, taxes and insurance to see if it is worth it. | ||
