I have a 2008 XB12S. I recently swapped the rear brake switch with one I received through a Harley Dealership. I did this because though the running lights worked, the rear brake wouldn't affect the light, and I needed it to pass a state inspection. Now, though both brakes will turn on the light, the light doesn't turn on with the bike. So now I have an even bigger safety problem, and I can't pass an inspection. The part number for the switch is H0203.02A8. Any thoughts on how to fix the issue? I've checked all of the fuses, no issue there. I can't use the old switch, because it was damaged while removing it. |

First, make sure the bulb is good. Don't just look, confirm with an ohm meter. If I am reading your post correctly, the brake light now works, and the running light does not. Per my '08 elect manual, the taillight and license plate light are both powered by the O/W ( orange with white tracer ) wire. If the license plate light works, the O/W wire has power. And if the brake light works, then the taillight assy is properly grounded, so one possible problem is eliminated. So, either the bulb, or the O/W wire is broken or disconnected somewhere, most likely under the seat somewhere. Hope this helps, Dave |

I thought it was a bunch of LEDs, not a single bulb in the tail light. I'll go check it out, and the wire. Just seemed weird to happen as soon as I swapped the brake switch, but it SHOULD be the right piece. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll go check them out. But if memory serves, I don't think the license plate light turns on either, so I'll guess it's the wire. |

Stock on the 08s it is a bulb, but it could have been replaced with an LED setup. Either way it sounds like you are on the right track |

I had a similar problem. The problem (no joke) was a family of mice that decided the tail section was a nice snug place to winter, and that the tail lamp wiring harness tasted delicious. |

You didn't switch the connectors by accident? |

So, I solved the issue, and got a state inspection today. I'm embarrassed to say that it was in fact the orange and white wire was loose. It works fine now. I figured it had to be something with the switch, since it was working fine before the installation. Thanks for the help, sorry it was just me being stupid. |

Good to hear you have the problem fixed, and that it was simple. And don't feel bad; it's not like doing an oil change and forgetting to reinstall the drain plug before adding new oil. Not like I have done something like that . . . . . . |
