I started hearing a metallic shaking noise following a pop after getting on it one day. Found out that one of the studs holding the exhaust in fell out. I replaced it and after about 20 minutes of riding I hear another pop and pull off the road to see the nut loose again. I go directly home and go to tighten it down some more only to find out it had fallen out again. Has anyone had this problem before or have any words of wisdom to bestow upon me I'd be happy to hear it. |

Did it break off? They are an interference fit stud and the rarely fall out, mostly break off do to over tightening and stress. |

I don't think so, I didn't see anything inside when I replaced it and still don't see anything inside. |

That is weird – normally they're so tight they break off and/or can never be removed. I have heard you're supposed to use fresh nuts on these after a couple of on/off cycles w/ the exhaust header. The nuts have a ratchet pattern that gets worn down and they loosen up much more easily. I don't think that could make the stud itself loose, but maybe it's coming loose and the vibration is somehow backing the stud out? |

Stripped threads in the head. Tap for a bigger stud. |

"Stripped threads in the head. Tap for a bigger stud." That's what it was sounding like to me. Better yet, instead of tapping for a bigger stud, get one of those threaded insert kits. Not the helicoils, the ones that are actually solid steel inserts that are threaded inside and out. You'll never have to worry about stripping out the studs again. Unfortunately their name is slipping my memory at the moment, but if you dig around I'm sure you can find them. EDIT: I believe the ones I'm thinking of are Timeserts. Only downside is the kit is more expensive because of the tap and installation tool, while the actual insert is only a couple dollars. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachments/general-miata-chat-9/129157d1418376712-stripped-exhaust-manifold-stud-time-sert-installation-process.jpg It sounds like EZ-Lok is a similar but cheaper version of that one. Beyond all of that, if other options are just too much money to consider I'm sure you probably could use a helicoil and still be fine with some normal exhaust studs. Oddly enough, this is the thread I was thinking of when I previously mentioned using the timeserts, and someone randomly posted a link to it in another post on here. They used it to replace the front engine mounts, but it'd be the same process for the exhaust studs. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/728956.html?1388882476 |
