Hey Buellers... I have a 2001 S3T with about 78K miles. My son has been using it. He was riding when a lot of oil blew out of the primary vent and dumped all over the rear wheel and other stuff back there. As I recall this is a symptom of seal failure between the engine and primary, where engine oil goes into the primary and the overfill condition in the primary will make it belch oil out the vent. How do you go about replacing this seal? I assume it is behind the small sprocket driving the primary chain. Any insight? Any special tools I need? I've got the FM, parts book and Lance @ StPaul HD's phone number. Barry Hollister, CA |

It's really just as easy as removing the primary chain with its sprockets, yanking the old seal out with a sheet metal screw, and seating the new seal with a big socket and a dead-blow mallet. Two important things to remember: the clutch hub nut is left hand thread and if you push the seal too far in it will rub on the crank and fail almost immediately. |

I recommend finding a seal driver to guarantee proper depth. Too deep, and the durability is impacted. |

I recently replaced mine and it was not that hard. I manufactured my own seal driver on a 3d printer and it worked perfectly. The real one is not too expensive and can be ordered from an HD shop, as well as most of the parts. The video below has the part numbers. There are a few good videos on it as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdovl68LIFo |

If you're super lazy/rich, any H-D dealer would be able to do this job too as it's exactly the same as a sporty and they fail just the same. Just refreshing to find a Buell thing that doesn't BAFFLE a H-D tech |

"If you're super lazy/rich" Or realistically don't have the time... I'm lucky I have another bike to ride or I would have had someone else do it. Took me several weeks just to get the time. Not everyone who uses a dealer is rich or lazy... |

LOL. I have twins and understand too. I was only joking. the time/money struggle is real. My ironhead has been becalmed for three years with a simple problem. My X1 needs tires and front end work but I can't find a dealer to touch it. If I break anymore bikes, I'll have to fix one or two! |

I just buy tires online and take the loose wheel to the dealer for mounting and balance. |
