I guess they didn't get the memo. ......................................... September 14, 2004 To: All U.S. Dealers Subject: Reminder Regarding Straight Pipes Dear Dealers: During the Dealer Meeting in San Diego this past July, I raised the issue (again) of excessive motorcycle noise, this time focusing on how the noise from straight, unbaffled pipes is impacting our sport. I want to remind you about what I said at the General Session. This issue cannot be ignored; it will not go away. Unless we, as riders, take steps to be socially responsible, our right to ride and our sport may be in jeopardy. To prevent that, I am asking you to stop selling straight pipes and to begin the work to convince your customers and employees to take unbaffled pipes off their bikes. I know what I'm asking you to do is very difficult, but it's also very necessary. The Motor Company cannot make this happen alone. We are making tools available to those of you on the front line so you can convince riders that straight pipes are killing our sport. One of these tools is a Noise Resource Line. If there are urgent, local concerns related to excessive motorcycle noise in your community, you can call this line and receive government affairs and public relations assistance for dealing with the issue. Resources are also available on h-dnet.com to help you with this issue, including some talking points to help you get the word out (Dealer Ops/Motorcycle Noise Resources). I know it won't be easy to influence this change, but we have to start the process, and you are in the best position to do that. Thanks in advance for giving it your best shot. For more information, contact the Noise Resource Line at 414-343-8302. Sincerely, Jim McCaslin President and COO Harley-Davidson Motor Company |

I am so getting on of these! Just bought one for my youngest. No more Pokemon (baseball cards are out of the question) cards in his spokes. Thanks for the link, Cody'll love it! I know it won't be easy to influence this change... Yeah, when the cop's Harleys here are louder than mine... |

The best part is how affordable it is. Only twenty bucks and I don't have to exchange my stock pipe! Bubba...you better watch out...you've got competition! |

Just wanted to say Don't buy a Schwinn Sting Ray. I used to work in a Bike Shop and we ordered a few of those. They are piles of crap. It is nearly impossible to get them to ride nice and quiet. The construction is very far below par. When it is difficult for mechanics who have worked on bikes for years to get them to work right then you know you have a bad product. Just think if it is difficult for me to set up properly then imagine what the guy at Wal-Mart, who has no clue what he is doing, trying to put one together. Never buy a bike from Wal-Mart. Always go to a local bike shop. Let me ask you this. If Wal-Mart sold and assembled Buells in store would you still buy one? |

I hope it was a real memo and that it gets all the attention and respect it deserves. It addresses straight pipes, not aftermarket mufflers. Straight pipes are both loud and obnoxious. You can get both performance and a mellow exhaust note out of your bike without being obnoxious. The AMA has been fighting the various government segments for years over the noise issue. If we don't do anything to police ourselves now, before you know it the EPA laws that govern motorcycles will be enforced via Federal, State or Local authorities and that will be the end of the performance aftermarket. What law? The one that references the use of parts approved for use on an approved for street use motorcycle. Translation: The stock muffler, intake and fuel management system. What Government? The same one that wants to take your...Whoops, I can't address that as it is political. However, if you haven't figured it out by now, you never will until it is too late and you have given away all your freedoms. |

Gschuette, As a bike shop owner I can say you are right on about the Schwinn Sting Rays. That unfortunately won't stop Walmart from selling a million of them to unsuspecting parents. Anyone who has a kid begging for one for the holidays should look at all the offerings available within the next few months from almost every legitimate bicycle maker. All the majors will be offering some kind of chopper. SteveH |

I've sat on the Giant brand cruiser/chopper bike. Looks like a much nicer build than the Schwinn, but didn't fit me too well. I'll have to see if the shop still has one in a box tonight and maybe build one up to see how it really goes together. http://www.giant-bicycle.com/us/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?model=10899&lYear=20 04&bikesection=8836 They really need to put up a different angled picture of the bike though. |

On the Giant - Nice stretched, minimalistic look (true to the chopper aspect). Saw no price. Wassit go for? |
