I feel that they are pretty much spot on with their assessments. I am that "Pops" in his story. I bought my Uly as I turned 49. Now at 59 I still love it. But were I to replace it I would have to look at it being easier to push around for storing and parking. | ||

Try pushing my 06 Triumph Tiger around - that thing is gigantic with the center of gravity about two feet up from the Uly. The Buell feels like a bicycle by comparison. | ||

I'm old now, so unless you do some kind of core exercises, it's not easy pushing a Triumph Explorer around, pushing the Ully around is a lot easier. My driveway is up hill, I would park the Explorer just outside the garage door and have to start the bike in order to pull it into the garage (12'), the ully I could just roll in myself. Well, after jockeying them both around in and out of the garage for a few months, surprisingly I started to be able to move the Explorer without having to start it. I do think they are making the adventure bikes to high and to heavy for there intended uses, I don't think most of us are doing jumps or motoring over logs, that's what dirt bikes are for, however to get to a good fishing hole or camping spot over a some what rough road is what I think most adventure bikes are purchased for. I'll also admit that, so far, every place I've been with the Explorer, I could have gotten to with my 1970 triumph bonnie. Also in my opinion, once set up with an equal set of tires, the ully will kill the Explorer off road. | ||

People need to spend a day in the woods with a KDX-200 just to know what kind of incredible things a real dirt bike can do. It will teach you fast that any street bike that is a good street bike isn't a dirt bike, and that almost any street bike can do OK on dry flat dirt roads or gravel. Adv bikes are the perfect naked standard, nothing more, but that's plenty. | ||

With the Uly I can drive quickly on back roads with no fear and enjoy the ride. I can throw the bags on and have a pleasant day or weekend with the wife. I seldom see dirt, mostly dirt roads. The roads of Massachusetts are often frost heaved pothole filled crap that seem like badly groomed dirt roads which is probably the best part of that extra suspension travel. I love my Swiss Army Bike. But that Black Lightning looks nice. | ||

Hey Reep, I'm no expert, especially now, but I was riding a 360, bored out to 400 Yammi through the woods of Vermont when you may have still been in your diapers, no argument, just saying. I know one can't even compare a dirt bike or even a dual sport to an adventure bike, like apples and oranges, and even then it depends a lot on the rider. When the time come to change tires, the ully will be getting some 60/40 or 70/30 rubber, then I'll know just how much better the ully is compared to the Expolrer. Johnshore, the roads here in n.j. are getting pretty crappy also. | ||

I saw a guy on a KTM 950 blow up a muddy rutted out hill that I was helpless in front of with my KLR-250. It is most definitely the Indian as much as the arrow. I get it is BEAUTIFUL to ride woods in Vermont... | ||

Reep . . . if you get the urge . . . I'm now getting settled in on the new farm and you're welcome to check in to the Inn . . . check out any bike you wish and go have a blast. The Hudson Valley, the Catskills and the Berkshires are among the most gorgeous places to explore in the U.S.A. Well . . . having ridden in 44 states . . . . I'd put them well up in my Top 100. :-) | ||

I'll chaperone reep to change tires when he gets a flat  I'll need a Uly replacement in a few years, the replacement will probably be one of the big Adv bikes. I love the Uly for hard bags, a bit of a Swiss army knife and I don't feel the need to wash it, like ever. Price of entry is a challenge and really makes the Ulys a great deal | ||
