It's a warm day in NJ today and while out for a ride, everything seemed to be normal except I noticed my blinker was cycling very fast and it was affected by the engine RPM. If I rev up to 3000 rpm it's blinking extremely fast but at idle it seemed normal, maybe even a little slow. So I put a volt meter on it and it was getting up to 17 volts at high rpm. I am using a lithium ion battery and it's been flawless over the past 3 months. I'm posting because my research shows (to my surprise) the regulator isn't your typical Harley sportster regulator and it seems there is many ways to go if you want to retro fit a regulator but I would much rather have the stock unit or at least a plug and play with minimal splicing. Thanks for any input! |

Shindengen FH020AA MOSFET. Multiple threads on here about it. Jack at roadstercycle.com rocks. Hardest part is fabbing a mount plate. |

Stock regulators are still available, I believe that Liberty Harley in Rahway is your nearest decent Buell dealer. Failing that, you can order one from Lance at St Paul Harley and have them ship you one. Their main line for the phone calls is 651-738-2168. E-mails should go directly to Lance’s email address: lkugler@stpaulhd.com . Swapping the VR is pretty easy, its the black brick on the front of the motor above the chin spoiler. It is held on by a couple screws. If your bike is an 06/07, the new regulator will have new connectors, as the old connector design was failure prone. It comes with connectors to retrofit on your bike. Speaking of that, if it is an 06/07, check the connector before ordering a VR. If you search on here for "77" connector issues, you will find details and pictures of the failure/melted connectors. You may just need to clean up or replace the connector to fix the charging issue. If you have an 08+, none of the above applies |

The mount plate is no longer an issue. Jack sells a universal mounting plate that moves the regulator over a bit and mounts it at the oil cooler screws. No stand offs needed. (Message edited by Mark_weiss on November 20, 2016) |

Thanks guys, Liberty Harley or Hannon Harley I think it's call now is pretty close and I even have a gift certificate for them $$$ The Shindengen I was researching and I didn't see to many people with the newer system. So that's why I was shying away from an aftermarket system. I have the 2009 Uly with about 13,000 miles on it. The next question.... Do you think my lithium ion battery caused my voltage regulator to act up? I've never seen one throw too much voltage. Usually they just crap out and throw no voltage at all! |

Interesting question about the LiIon battery. It actually turns out to be pretty complicated, but as an EE who has thought about it, my answer would be "It could be, but I doubt it". So I doubt the LiIon battery is the problem. (Hypothesis on "it could be": This is a shunt regulator system, so the VR has to "eat" what the bike (including battery) does not use. If the old lead acid technology basically turned the battery into a massive heat sink / resistor to dump extra energy into, and the LiIon with its smart charging circuity just sipped exactly what the cells needed but not an electron more, that could put more load on the VR. And in fact, a long lived LiIon would have to do that, because overcharging a LiIon battery destroys it quickly. Perhaps aggravated by a switch to LED or HID headlights that also draw less power. But that depends on the VR being pretty marginal to begin with). |

I'm still running all the stock lights and I have heard of the shunt style VR. That's when it has different stages as the voltage increases it converts the extra voltage into heat. So if I understand what you are saying is my batt hits it's voltage limit and the regulator hits it's limit and voltage starts climbing. I guess I'm gonna need to bust out the manual and the multimeter to see what exactly is going on. As of now, it's showing high voltage 16+ volts at the battery @2800 Thanks for your input |

All of the stock and most of the aftermarket regulators for the Buell are shunt. With a shunt regulator system, a full wave rectifier converts the AC from the stator into DC positive chopped sine waves, and whenver the rising wave goes above the target voltage (say 14.2V) the power is just dumped to ground for the rest of the wave. So yes, shunt regulators will result in extra power becomming heat in the VR and the stator windings. If you are seeing 16v across the battery, your VR or its associated wiring has failed. It should be swapping over to just dump the voltage to a short to ground as soon as it hits 14.2 (or die trying). |

"Mark, where can I get the mounting plate? Thanks" From Roadster Cycle. Order the kit of your choice (depends on your soldering and crimping skills) and the mount plate. You'll need to make a run to the hardware store to purchase a pair of mount-plate-to-bike screws. The threads in the oil cooler bracket are not the same as the screws included with the plate. Mounting is about as simple as it can be. Use some thread lock compound on the screws. |
