I am in the process of replacing the rocker gaskets, the engine has been stood for a while and the oil has been drained. I have got the piston to TDC but when I drop the rocker box on the cylinder head it doesn't seat fully down because there is not enough clearance in the pushrod, rocker arm, valve train. At TDC on the power stroke both valves should be fully closed and there should be some clearance. Would this be normal if all the oil has drained out of the self adjusting system, or do I have a more sinister problem. | ||

Same situation when I did my '01. Never had one apart, but I believe the lifters have a ball and spring assy inside to maintain oil pressure at the correct level. What you are seeing is most likely that spring pressure. After confirming TDC on the compression stroke, you may have .125in gap or so between the rocker box and the head. Go ahead and install the rocker box, confirming the pushrods are properly seated, and tighten the bolts evenly to seat the rocker box squarely. One caution, when I did mine, at initial start up, the engine sounded terrible; so bad I shut it down right away. After deciding I had assembled it correctly, I felt the noise was excess valve clearance due to the lifters bleeding down. A gentle, sub 2k RPM lap around the block and all was well.
