Hi guys, My bike died on me the other day. Tested for spark and had none. Have 12v going into the coil and a good ground. Replaced the coil and wires. Same results. Bike shut off while traveling home from work at about 60mph. Tach jumped around as it was shutting off. What's my next move? Thanks, Mike |

Check or bypass the micros switches at the clutch and sidestand that are to prevent you from starting in gear or with the sidestand down. (Message edited by Jim2 on November 11, 2016) |

I just got done checking all the switches. I now have very weak spark. It popped a few times but still no fire. The only other 2 things in the ignition system are the cdi box and the pick up. I haven't received the manual I ordered yet so I have no idea how or if the cdi can be tested. Thanks for your response Jim. |

Have you looked at the timing module in the "points cover"? A few have had failures that looked like the damn thing melted. |

+1 on what Nate said. Also check the frame ground behind the battery box under the seat and bodywork to be sure it is clean. Clean the contacts for the ignition and starter relays. They are in a box together side by side. Put the ignition one where the starter relay was and the starter relay where the ignition relay was. I use CDI electronic cleaner you can get at most auto parts stores. Just pull connection, spray on and reconnect. Don't sand it damages the fragile thin coating. This is just to establish a strong electrical path for the ignition and control module assuming they aren't bad. Most of the problems I see are just corrosion at connections. |

Grounds were verified with a meter. Here's an update. I left the battery charger on the bike last night. When I hooked it up it showed 70%. Cranked over fine but had weak spark. Went out to it this morning. Charger showed 100%. Cranked it over, bright spark and fired right up! I'm thinking maybe there's a bad plate in the battery? Not providing enough amps on initial start? |

Nate, I did check the pickup. I just had the cam cover off last weekend to replace the gasket. It was leaking oil. All my connections are clean. |

When my sideways plug went bad, it was just intermittent. It'd usually work, but sometimes it'd stop. If you checked yours and it appeared to work, it may still be going bad occasionally. Try jumping the switch and see if the problem still comes back. |

Starter stealing all voltage so spark is too weak, have had several bikes like that, one of my racebikes is notorious for it so much so I installed a second battery. Test battery voltage when you hit starter button. |

Installed a new battery yesterday. Voltage is great. Spark is also much better. Rode to work today despite the 28 degree temp when I left. Was over 60 at quitting time. I have a 60 mile round trip commute and the S3 never missed a beat. Thanks to all who responded to my thread. Your help is much appreciated. Over the winter I plan to pull the engine for resealing. Then send the frame out for powder coat. I also need to repaint the tank due to the notorious paint bubbling. |
