If Buell did significant design work on the Hastur Motor, I could see Buell buying the design from Hero. Or using the design work for a similar motor. Than having the engine made by Rotax or in China. M |

The electric motor pictured is a bit over ten pounds and yields 10hp and 16+ lbft. It is brutal with full torque at stall. When coupled with a 10 to 20 hp water cooled ICE as in a hybrid (HHMmmmm as the patent Erik has) the combo would be light, powerful and fiercely independent as an all around town and country bike. It would punch way above its class in a stoplight GP and provide control such as ABS in spades. I have these motors employed as outboards on a forty foot boat and they kick ass totally. That would be equivalent to the 600 cc single at 270 pounds about which I often muse but with real manners on the road. Now, will a certain someone build the damn thing?

How much do the motors cost? The batteries are the bigger problem. No cheap / easy to package / durable / quick to charge options yet. The motors, particularly the one in the Zero's, seem to be there already. Man I want a zero DS. |

The dark grey/black area of the motor is the electronic commutator which is a circuit board and thin plastic housing with a 2" box fan. The aluminum part is the motor itself. The commutator can be mounted anywhere making the motor even smaller. These motors are 'motor generators' using 'buck/boost'. Therefore one or two can power the bike while doubling to start the IC engine during riding. This keeps the battery charged, smaller& lighter, especially if integrated with special capacitors. Also there is a battery company that has a unique patent along with an alkaline fuel cell patent with whom I'm involved. This motor could be placed up against a Zero any day. As for cost, the motor is in very limited production. However, the way that it is made would be far less expensive in full production runs. Quite competitive on price, power and weight. There are hybrid capacitors making their way into the battery arena that have nearly instant charge rates to augment any old or new type battery. I am very confident that the Elves would be most aware of what inventiveness goes on in Machine Design, NASA Tech Briefs and DARPA briefs, etc. Some of that high tech is translatable and some not. With a number of great Buells, Bultaco, BSA & Suzuki singles, the romance of the ICE is not wasted on this guy. That said, the future for Erik Buell & Elves is huge. There is a lot of great tech out in the world to continue to make EBR the premier American sportbike company. Sketch of an electric street carver.

The only "spy" photo I've ever seen of a Buell or EBR product was when the British mag Motorcycle News prematurely released a pic of the then-new 2004 XB12S a few days before the release. I'm pretty sure Buell was NOT happy about that. I think the LA IMS is next month; hopefully we'll see something then. |

Entertaining design excercises, but they lost me as soon as they said "crash proof" and "don't need to wear a helmet". Which is just insane. No computer trickery can stop a truck from blowing a redlight and driving over me. At least not in my lifetime. |

When I cracked my pelvis (but not my skull), it was a result of a driver making a turn through a small (invisible to man and machine) gap in a line of stopped traffic (going same direction) to my left. I was already covering my brake, I did a picture perfect stoppie and touched the tip of my mirrors first into the middle of her rear fender. The only computer that could have prevented that accident would be one in *her* corolla. And what computer can fix a large spill of diesel fuel half way through a turn... |

Well Reepi that is what happens when you brush off an article because of its title They explain it is crashproof because it is a concept of a design of what motorcycles can be like in the future. Also in the future, there won't be trucks or corollas running red lights. Given it is self balancing, (not explained but likely gyroscopes) you can commute to work on diesel and not notice. That concept already exists in the Lit Motors C1, which they have demonstrated riding around on a ice rink |
