A list of good sources for OEM parts. "Good" will be measured by:

1) Participation in Badweb, because a member of the community is always better than a stranger.
2) Support of Badweb, because the board is an incredibly valuable resource to help use parts (time and money are both valuable)
3) Expertise
4) Customer Service
5) Turnaround time

From the American Sportbike closure announcement:

quote:

We know that Buell motorcycles are both worthy and unique motorcycles and hope that no one abandons the marque because of our demise. We realize that parts support (especially OEM parts support), is key to an enjoyable ownership experience. To that end, OUR OEM parts supplier for many years, St. Paul Harley Davidson & Buell, is ready to pick up the flag and support Buell owners worldwide. Lance Kugler, the parts manager at St. Paul HD/Buell, is himself an avid Bueller and knows the motorcycles and their parts fitment well. He has been actively supporting the marque via Ebay, E-mail, and phone orders for many years. He has assured us that he is ready to supply all the parts that we have provided and more, and will even hire as necessary to keep Buell owners supported. St. Paul doesn’t have an ordering web site at this time, so for the near future, orders will need to be via email and/or phone. St. Paul’s eBay username is 651Lance. Their main line for the phone calls is 651-738-2168. E-mails should go directly to Lance’s email address: lkugler@stpaulhd.com

I've had several dealings with Lance.

1) He seems to be able to spot a Badweb part based need promptly. When I see someone looking for a part I sometimes flip him a link to the post.

2) I consider Lance and SPHD a valuable resource. I needn't worry about parts.

3) Lance knows Buell parts. Period.

4) Service has a taint of HD . . . but Lance more than makes up for it by going the extra mile. (By the way, unless I miss my guess the lack of Buell online presence is the doing of HD . . not SPHD)

5) Turnaround has been excellent.

I'm thrilled that Al and Joanne are retired and having a great time and that Al put us, as Buell owners, in such good stead before leaving.

No parts worries.

I needed a low fuel sensor for my 08XT. I thought about riding up to my local HD dealer, Powder Keg HD in Mason. They are fine, but don't stock much of anything and who are hit and miss in terms of knowing squat about Buells. And it would have been two trips, one to order and pay, and a second to pick it up. Meh.

So I decided to try an online order from Surdyke. They have the parts and ordering forms online. The tech support was weak (I got the part number from a badweb search). I don't know how good the support would have been if I picked up the phone and called them, I didn't need too.

The website was nice, very painless for ordering.

They offered a "discount" that made up for about half of what the shipping charges were.

The time it took to get my part was long but not insufferable. Between one and two weeks. So basically they were doing the same thing my local dealer would have done, which is take my money and order, send it on to HD, wait for it to come in to their shop, then transfer it into my hands. Which is stupid 1980's thinking, but it is what it is.

Shipping was reasonably prompt. Packaging was stupidly over the top... this was for a part that would easily fit in a closed hand, and it was in it's original HD sealed baggie, then put in a padded UPS 8x10 envelop, then put in a cardboard UPS 10x12x1 shipping box. Good for protecting and not loosing the item, crazy for efficiency and the planet.

I got the part, it's fine.

So all in all a good mediocre experience. I don't mean mediocre as in bad, I just mean it as "perfectly adequate but nobody going above and beyond". Which is fine. Adequate is adequate.

Lance likely could have hooked me up with much better support, more common sense in shipping, about the same cost, and probably a little quicker turnaround.

If EBR made a warehousing deal with Amazon, and hired somebody like Lance or Al and paid them a good wage to answer the phone for people that need it, they could easily and cheaply develop a really kick ass parts distribution solution.

Not to get too off topic, but I have wondered why Al did not sell the business...

Still lots of interest in our rides and parts will be needed for a while.
