About 2,000 seat miles on a new to me 20,000 mile '08 12X. The thing idles at cold worse than any carbureted bike I've owned. Sometimes stumbles and stalls once or twice. Pulling out of the driveway for the first time it will cough every now and then and the fueling seems very eneven (feels like lean surging an early spark). Give the bike about 5 minutes and it's 70% better. Get the bike fully warm and it's 90% better (I need to load a race map to solve some of the crappy part throttle mapping).

Typical or am I in for new intake seals?

Everyone here agrees that the IDS race ECU is money well spent.

It might be worth checking the Idle Air Valve (IAV). If that's sticky or partially clogged, it may not allow in enough air to maintain idle speed when the bike is cold.

Could also be a vacuum leak or faulty temp sensor on the rear head (?).

The ecm might be part of the problem, but it sounds like you've got some trouble shooting to do.

Do you have the service manual?

Start by getting the engine HOT, then do a TPS reset by the book. Your year, no tools are required. If the TPS isn't properly set, then NO troubleshooting will do you any good. the TPS may or may not fix the symptom...but at least you'll be able to check that off the list as you chase other stuff.

Also make sure you're running 10R12X plugs. They were a running change to the later bikes, as they are more foul-resistant than the plain 10R12 plug.

I messed around with this on my 09 for awhile. The racing ecm fixed it for me. Money well spent. It will make the bike behave like it has a choke during cold starts ie idles high until it is warmed up sufficiently, then it drops to 1100 rpm. It takes some getting used to, but I just start my bike, let it idle high and when it drops down to the regular idle I know it's warmed up enough to ride. You don't want to start the bike cold and just jump on and go. My Uly doesn't like that. It may help to clean out your IAC. Like Rat mentions, the 10r12x plugs work great too. I think I tried running ngk irridium plugs and ended up going back to the harley10r12x plugs. Be sure and check your plugs and wires too.

Thanks everyone. Loaded the '08 Race file last night. Behaves just as Sharkguy describes. You can smell the unburned fuel at idle ever so slightly.

It's a bit rich at WOT between 5k and 6k.

The biggest benefit was that it completely smoothed out the 2000 to 3000 stumbling and borderline lean condition.

I need to learn more about the ECU and whether it has a short and long term fuel trim (+/-) and whether I can either play with it or need to adapt around it.

Newport mike: not sure of ddfi 3 and afv definition. I don't think there is a long or short term fuel trim like autos. Just afv is the term for the one term.
Curious as to cold start enrichment, higher idle till warm and then lower idle. . My 07 12x was this way till a motor roll. Yeah, did a lot of stuff, life got in way and I took 5 months to do it. Ecm was not powered up as battery wasn't in bike. When bike was restarted , I used ecmspy ver 2 to handle tps reset etc. Since then, hit starter button, motor lights around 900 and chugs for two minutes until I take off. When hot idle smooth at 1000. Bike never fails to start. Wife said one morning that exhaust smelled of fuel to high heaven while first started and idling. I have no sense of smell so I hadn't realized that was the case. Any ideas?

Mike, I actually bought a new racing ecm from
EBR. Mine was set up for the 09 uly stock exhaust and stock air filter. As others have mentioned they are available from ids now. I don't know what you downloaded into yours but make sure you do the TPS reset like Rat suggests. After starting and allowing to warm up take it for a 15 min or so ride and keep the RPMs around 3000. This allows the ECM to learn. Then just ride normally.

Explain about the heated Oxygen sensor and why you think that is better or does anything. The way I understand our bikes ECM logic is that the O2 sensor is called into play at a certain temp reported by the rear head heat sensor. Ox sensor does nothing until that time.
