Doing some maintenance on the bike, oil change, rear brake pads, tires and spark plugs. Well, the rear plug was a piece of cake! The front plug, well, it got real ugly real quick! I do not rotate the engine to replace the front plug. Got the old one out no problem. Putting the new one in went well up to the final tightening part. Just as I could feel the plug starting to tighten, it went loose! I then attempted to remove it had to use as magnet to pull out the plug. When I saw the plug there were no threads on the plug, just the insulator! I got very lucky and was able to remove the threaded part with a easy out, without having to rotate the engine, or taking the head a part! I feel very lucky today! | ||

Wow, I went about it the same way for the front plug without rotating. If I lost resistance while tightening it, I would have shat a brick. Luck was on your side, great fix! edit: are the heads aluminum in the 1125? as I thought about it, it'd be odd that an aluminum cylinder head took the threads off a steel spark plug! Maybe there are steel inserts or helicoils from the factory? (Message edited by jeepinbueller on April 22, 2016) | ||

Dam Jap plugs. Glad you got it out the only time I change plugs so far is when I do the valves. | ||

I'd call that a rare occurrence. I've been wrenching for more than 30 years, I've only seen that happen maybe a couple of times. I won't say thousands of plugs, but I'd definitely say I've changed out hundreds of them. | ||

Ya, I was trying to figure how many plugs I have changed in my life, and it has to be at least a hundred. I can't remember ever having one do that. It just started to get tight and then,the fun began. What made it even more funny, was my 17 year old son came into the garage to ask me a question as my brain was frantically processing the worst case scenario. After asking the question he looked at me and said, you okay Dad? I said can you give me a couple of minute as I am trying not to go into DEFCON level 5 mode. Thankfully all ended up fine! |
