I have been noticing that I am making many more "mid-course corrections" in turns of late. Both front & rear isolators look OK, BRAND NEW (GRRR) rear shock (set per instructions), tightened steering head bearings, tyres fair (plenty o' tread on sides of rear tyre, unrolled middle between here and Newfoundland) with correct pressures, forks set correctly. I'm still not getting a smooth, comfortable line. Am I trying too hard or missing something? Or is it (as usual) the loose nut that connects the seat to the bars? Oz |

Are you looking as far through the turn as you can? I was taking turns too tight, all it was needed was for me to enter the turn later and look further ahead. |

Always. I try to "visualize" the line and drive it. But as I said I seem to be making the small adjustments more frequently than I remember. Actually to the point that I am becoming annoyed with myself. I know that I do this when there is limited sight distance i.e. VERY dark (no cracks, those who know me), raining, sun glare or when I am fatigued. I know I need to replace my steering head bearings as they are suffering from the "Buell-not-enough-factory-lube-then-ridden-in-the rain" syndrome. But I still feel I may be missing something. BTW, if you decide to do NL2005, you are welcome to stop here for rest, service or whatever. (At least 2 computers, no waiting) and if you back it down to 500-550 mi/day, I'll even ride with you. Twristchiness is caused by not looking through the corner far enough. IE, looking to close a head. |

OZ -- when fatigued and stressed, your skills will seem to diminsh until they become so ingrained that they become almost habits -- it can also be that you are now more knowledgable, and noticing things you didn't see before in either event, your body will let you know when to slow down, stop for a cuppa and a strech, or, in the worst case, stop for a while . . . . usful tip numjber 4,713 -- while not moving, look up at the sky -- if it seems to be moving away from you, you're getting tired, and should re-phydrate, eat sumpin, rest for a few . . . .thanks to Sgt Kim for that! |

Djkaplan - Will recheck locating links today... I tend to keep an eye on the front one and the associated (head) bracket. Bomber - Part of the above ~500 mi. thing is that that is where I tend to start to lose concentration. A dangerous, if not deadly, condition on a motorcycle. I almost launched myself into four lane cross traffic this summer at the end of the ride from Port Aux Basques to Saint John's. The last 60 miles or so, it was foggy and I could only see 3 or 4 road stripes ahead (and what I thought was Newfie's taillight) - which ever way the 4th stripe turned, so did I - at 65 mph. In retrospect, not one of the brightest things I ever did. But I kept thinking, if they can do it, so can I. It occurred to me the next day that all the other riders had been rotating with Mr. Grumpy and sleeping in the car. I had ridden 1500 mi.+ in the previous 3 days. You should ask Grndskpr about my skill at navigating motel "driveways" also. When riding alone, I just say fork it and stop. So I guess that lets out the "more knowledgeable", eh? Actually, I am discouraged by my perceived lack of improvement despite the practice and effort I input. I don't think I can ever be as good as Gary McCoy, but I shouldn't have 1" chicken strips either. That's why I asked the original question. Oz re. useful tip - I'll try that, I already know what to do when I look up at the sky and it's moving toward me, changing colours, patterns - ooooo cool!!! |

oz -- ride with better riders whenever you can, especially in a controlled envirnonment (track day, btrax) -- it's easy for your skills to plateau if all/most of your riding is similar insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expect a differnet outcome -- vary your riding experiences, ride with different riders, practice, and learn! as to when the colors start, call me, quick, and be prepared to share! I really miss seein things that aren't there! |

Remember when the high tech psychedelic lighting was a black light and floresent paint? And if you had some extra $ you might find a strobe light! No I didn't forget the lava lamp, I had a bad experience with one. |

OK, now I see my problem, I've been trying to go through the corners with both wheels on the ground!!!! Stopped by two local rice shops yesterday re. suspension adjustments, they were just as -duh- as the local HD stealer (sigh). (The people I know were not working) Checked all motor links and isolators - looked OK. Risked my license testing on a freshly paved semi-curvy road in a VERY uptight jurisdiction. curves marked @ 40, road marked @ 50, speedo marked @ 65. Two clicks more on each fork leg = better (I think) Going to test more now in a better location... Oz You are all jealous because the voices only talk to ME! |

To anyone who would like to experience exactly what my bike was doing, lower the pressure in your front tyre to 19-20 lbs. I know, I know, I should know better. Only two things in my defense, usually I check pressure (and take a good look at) in both tyres 2-3 times a month - daily when I'm touring - and I have never had more than a pound or so of change -AND- no one on the board caught it either! I hope this is a lesson to all of us. (BTW, the tyre looked just fine - not soft, squatty or anything. Feels really weird now, back to it's usual on-rails handling...) Oz and now, back to your regularly scheduled flashback(s) |

That happened to me a couple weeks ago Ozz, Are you sure my bike didn't catch anything from yours when it was here!!!!!! I had my S1 sitting in the garage during the rainy season/repairs to stator and when I took it out it handled like a piece of crap. There was only about 17lbs in the front tire. Put the correct amount of air in and back to scraping my boots. |
