OK - So I;m in the process of converting my 2003 XB9R to the newer 14mm belt, took the belt I received Tuesday from New Castle HD out of the box, and I see this as I lay it on the pulleys. It appears not all of the edges of the belt are encapsulated in rubber. Is this fraying OK, or is it a flaw? Never put a new belt on before. I guess I'll call them tomorrow. Freekin' belt was back-ordered and finally came in.... Can you guys offer any insight? |

Is this normal for a brand new belt to 'shed' brand new like this? |

For a new out of the box belt i would not accept that. I have seen it happen on a belt after a minor slight. To fix it i burned the frayes off with a lighter and it's still working okay. |

Might be ok if you burn off the frays... But I agree, on a new belt, it's no bueno... take it back get another. |

They are saying run it......they'll wear off.......not uncommon. Is this a Sportster belt, or a Buell only item? Are the aftermarket ones better from a production or quality perspective? |

when the belts are made they are long tube then cut into individual belts. That's why you'll see some fraying on the sides. |

That is just a byproduct of how the belts are cut, they are made like a loaf of bread, and each belt is a slice. If they won't exchange it I wouldn't worry about it. The Sportster belt is different in design and will not work, most specifically they are not designed to bend backwards over the idler pulley. I've seen people mount a sportster belt but were not able to get far before it broke due to the stress. |

Thanks guys......new to these belts, always ran Japanese manufacturers with chains. I really appreciate the reassurance. I thought the way it was fraying that it looked like an aramid weave - and the bread analogy makes sense. |

Seems to have worn off/polished up. Went for a quick ride last night, about 10 mi. Now, keep my fingers crossed for the next 15k mi. |
