How are airboxes compatible through all XB12 models & years? In particular, would XB12R -2005 inner airbox cover (P0215.1AA) snap on and work on 2006 Ulysses?

Yes, I believe any XB airbox will fit any other XB.

OTOH, I believe the later airboxes, 2007 and up, have additional holes that allow additional airflow. A lot of people have "Swiss cheesed" their earlier airboxes to achieve the same effect.

The 2003-05 inner airbox lid will snap on, but you will have a hard time starting your bike as it completely cuts off all airflow to the motor.

The 2003-05 bikes pull air through the left side scoop, up a hole in the left side of the frame into the airbox. On the 2006 and newer bikes, this frame hole was sealed off, giving additional fuel capacity. The 2006 bikes suck in air from the right rear side of the airbox, and for 2007 and up they changed it so it sucks in air from multiple spots.

The 2007 and up inner airbox is regarded as the best cover to get, but you can easily drill large holes in an older airbox and use that too.

Aye. I'd like to get an airbox for drilling so it doesn't matter how many holes it has now ; ) That's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks!

An early model "choked off" airbox cover can be converted to resemble the newer version. The older versions also seem to lack molded attachment points for the muffler valve actuator. I was able to cut in new air holes without too much difficulty . . .and plan to try mounting the actuator perhaps using tubing sleeves . . .

Some of the older covers (like in the pic above) had the actuator rest on a piece of foam rather than mount directly to the airbox.

Teeps -> Of course I don't mind getting parts from US if the seller will ship but most of the time it just doesn't pay off.
