My parts manual doesn't show a number for the seal that fits in the channel of the airbox base plate and seals the cover. It's shown separately in the drawing, but not in the parts list. Anyone know if it's available, or if a substitute has to be used? I suppose foam weatherstripping would work. | ||

Anyone have a better idea than foam weatherstripping? I was cleaning up the airbox base for the '08 R yesterday and noticed the seal was torn and missing in places. I have some stick-on felt weatherstripping too, but would have to cut it to the correct width. | ||

We buy gasket kits at work that you can make your own gasket. It's a lot like an o-ring. You just cut to length and they have glue to fasten the ends together. I don't know if it would work but might be better then none at all. | ||

Just look for 3/16"weatherstrip. I think that's about right. I'll check in the morning. Z | ||

Do you know if it's available in square or rectangular cross section? Know what the material is? I put it together with hardware store self-adhesive weatherstripping foam for now. It will do the job for the task at hand, which is running and riding the bike enough to (hopefully) identify all of it's problems. I'll keep an eye out for something more durable. I took the engine breather hose out of the airbox and extended it to the rear of the swing arm, so that should help the foam last a little longer. Edited to add that I have an oil separator off of one of my airplanes that will fit under the tail but haven't installed it yet. (Message edited by Panshovevo on September 20, 2015) | ||

Yeah I looked again, the seal is part of the baseplate ass'y. Not quite 3/16 but close, more like .14". Z | ||

The stuff we have is round but I dont think that would matter as long as the diameter is wide enough to make a full clamping surface at all contact points. Its nitrile so oil and gas won't hurt it. It's Loctite oring kit 00112. They might be expensive too. I wonder if you could just run a small bead of silicone or RTV around it, let it set up, then clamp the top down. |
