Had the S1 for 5 or 6 years. Tank is bubbled, of course. Always run well, even after sitting for months. Last year, it started popping and farting some, so I decided it needed new intake/exhaust seals (never changed since '97). Let it sit for couple of months until I got those done, then it wouldn't start. Pulled carb apart and found it full of green gunk:
Cleaned carb all out, put back on, running great again. Now, 2 months later, with virtually NO sitting, it's gunked again. Has tank reached some critical point where the crap ethanol gas they force on us is rapidly reacting with the nylon? I've read all the threads about folks trying to line their tanks for anti-bubbling painting purposes, but has the "green gunk" ever been a problem for anyone else? I can't ride a bike that I have to disassemble and clean the carb of every two months... Any helpful thoughts? |

In Mn we can get non ethenol gas. This does appear to be a gas issie not a tank issue. Make sure you use top grade fuel or non ethenol. I have never had this issue |

Wow.....thats nasty. I also think it has to be a gas problem, but i have never seen anything like that. Is is gunky, or more of a corrosion.......like does it easily wipe/clean off, or do you have to hit it with a solvent and scrub? |

Jay, maybe it is our local gas, mine do it also pretty regularly. I recently have gotten Stabil for the ethanol fuel to see if that helps. Mine don't get ridden regularly though, surprised if yours is being used and still doing it. I have even had the stuff almost form a gel in my fuel lines. |

ahhh the joys of ethanol gas the green is a corrosion from the ethanol. you need to REALLY clean the carb. take it fully apart and get all the junk out. I would flush the whole fuel system while your at it and try to run additives or decent non-ethanol fuel if you can get it. |

When it has been happening to me recently mine has just been the slow/idle jet that has been getting plugged up, I would just pull the bowl off while the carb was installed and remove the jet for cleaning. |

Since it happened so fast, perhaps you have a buildup in the petcock/filter screen thing. I would open that thing up before running it again. |

are you buying gas from the same place? its possible your "local" or "favorite" shop is using a lower grade fuel? it definitely looks like a fuel grade issue to me as well.... |

There is a microscopic alge that can grow in diesel fuel and occanly in gas, once a system is injected it is hard to cure. Most of time it comes from an infected source tank, so change fuel stations. But in the mean time clean carb and tank and all parts with lacour thinner, get it at Walmart paint dept, replace rubber fuel line and fuel filter.. Clean by soaking small part in a small container and carb body in a larger container. Pour some in tank and slosh around, repeat tank several times..... Good luck! |
