Got this beast 2 months ago. I really love it, when its on the road, heh. Bought with 22k miles, brand new tires, 20k mi service, and really clean. Ive already had to replace rear wheel bearings. I suspect, when tires were put on, tech didnt install rear wheel according to SM, over torqued, and mushroomed the rear spacer. I ran it out of fuel once, when I assumed the fuel light meant I could actually get to a gas station, and ended up replacing the plugs, and pulling the fuel pump. The sock was toast...falling apart to the touch. I'm afraid it might have sucked some up into the pump, though I was able to get it running again....for a couple of days at least. I ran it out of gas again, since this time the low fuel light didnt come on at all. I was able to put fuel in it, and finally got it started, but had to really feather the throttle to get it home ( approx 7 miles). It hasn't run since. I bought an Emspy cable, and got the software ( free version ) and was able to reset TPS. Put another new set of factory recommended plugs, gapped correctly, and it still wont run. It will start, and if you feather the throttle, will run really rough, backfiring through the breather and exhaust, but dies if you relax the throttle. It will start back up, but just wont stay that way. A fellow member stopped by a couple of days ago, and after chatting a bit advised me a couple of days later to check the pump wiring for the chaffing issue, since the low fuel light didnt work. If that doesnt resolve it, I'm going to replace the pump. Any other ideas? Ive enjoyed lurking for the past couple months, and look forward to being a part of your community. Thanks for looking. In ECMspy the AFV (adaptive fuel value) to 100 for both cylinders. Running it out of gas may have screwed up those numbers. |

I set the AFV to 100 when resetting the TPS. Didnt see any way to set for each cylinder. |

Maybe you fried your fuel pump by overheating it while it was dry when you ran it out of gas twice. |

I understand thats possible, since the fuel is the only thing keeping it cool. The first time was a rookie mistake, I honestly thought I could make the 20miles to the gas station once the light came on, and the second time was ignorance combined with a non working LFL. I'll say this, I will never pass another gas station while riding this bike, haha. When running diagnostics through ECM Spy, the pump tests ok. One thing I noticed today, I pulled the line off from the throttle body, as done for a psi test...I toggled the kill switch and noticed barely a trickle of fuel, hardly 49-51 psi worth. Looks like I'm going to order a fuel pump. |

With the sock toasted, I wonder if you didn't push debris from the sock through the pump into the injectors in which case they'd be clogged. |

judging by the cam cover you have an 06/07. Make sure you are NOT using 10R12X plugs, they argue with the early DDFI systems. use plain ol' 10r12 plugs. Your profile shows TN...dunno my geography, but send vern (etennuly) a note. He may be close enough to set you straight. He's...odd, but he's a good guy at heart |

Interesting... You *should* have been able to make the 20 miles to the gas station after the light came on. .8 gallons, right? At 40 MPG (and you have to really beat the bike to get that low a milage) you should be able to hit 32 miles. So I think you may have things backwards. The failing fuel pump was your problem all along. Replace it. People dug up the part for a car, I forget the details, but you can get it from the auto parts store. Then see if the injectors are clogged from the old sock. |

Rat, what are the symptoms of the 10R12X? I think that's what I am running on my 07 Uly, and didn't think I had a problem. I have the comfort kit reflash. |

Reepicheep- There is no comfort kit reflash, which changes the fan logic, for pre-08 bikes. |

My mistake then. I thought there was, and I thought the reciept provided by the person I bought the bike from included a mention of a reflash. But that's just a memory of a glance polluted by assumptions. |

Hey Summander, Just wanted to say welcome. Way to jump into the deep end. As you can see, this is a great group. We (they, actually, the smart ones who really know these bikes) are quite generous with information. Good luck getting the fuel pump sorted. Sure sounds like a fueling issue to me. New auto parts store pump and (hopefully) you'll be back in business. Some quick comments on mpg and reserve: I just finished a 2,100-mile trip on my bike. Big fun. I averaged 48 mpg with bags and gear. I didn't flog the bike but I don't ride easy, either. As has been mentioned, he fuel light comes on with .8 of a gallon. If I am concerned about making it to the next station, which was a real problem where I was riding, I reduced my speed to 60, tucked, and used some hypermiling techniques to stretch the reserve. Twice I got more than 40 miles out of the reserve. Once I had less than .1 of a gallons when I got to the pump. The bike took 4.3 gallons to fill just above the frame neck. The other time, I still had .3 of a gallon left. So, I know the bike is capable of low- to mid-50s mpg. If I rode conservatively all the time, range wouldn't be an issue at all. Of course, if I were smarter about my fuel strategy, I'd never have to go into hypermiling mode. Keep us posted on your repairs... bb |

If I was doing a lot of touring, I'd also invest in a small flat Rotopax tank slapped onto the triple tail. But that's a different topic. |

The low fuel light could also be a victim of the triple splice in the steering neck. There are two cold splicers in that wire bundle where it has to flex over the steering head. They tend to break frequently causing momentary losses of power in the instrument cluster and the right turn signal system. When you did the TPS reset was the engine warmed up to operating temperature? I did one cold one time that made it run like you described that yours is doing. I cleaned the edges of the throttle plate of carbon, warmed up the engine and redid the TPS reset. All was good after that. Running it out of gas should not cause any undue problems. If it ate part of that pick up sock there must have been some special stuff in the tank at one time or another. Could have also eaten seals and such. Wires rubbing through on the pump would have been quite noticeable when you had it out. I'm about 45 miles NE of Maryville. PM me when ever you like. |

Ordered HFP-361U fuel pump. Installing tomorrow, will update then. @Ratbuell I installed 10R12A Plugs, $4.95 from Smoky Mountain Harley. @Etennuly I tried it both ways, first cold, then fought the throttle to warm up to 185C, and tried again, same thing. The small trickle of gas coming out of throttle body feeder hose makes me think its fuel pump. George stopped by after speaking with you, and told me about the fuel pump wires. I appreciate everyones input, and will update after pump install. |

"I pulled the line off from the throttle body, as done for a psi test...I toggled the kill switch and noticed barely a trickle of fuel, hardly 49-51 psi worth". The fuel pressure setting is 49 PSI. That is a static running pressure in a CLOSED system IE Not a open pipe. You will be able to check the pumps set point (49 PSI) and actual running pressures in real time with TunerPro. That said if ECM-SPY says it is ok then it probably is. The pump has a filter on it but if it is toast it could pass dirt to the injectors and block them up since the hole is VERY tiny. Easy to check, test and clean if needed. |

IT LIVES!!! Here is the old pump Notice the 30R7 fuel line...no bueno.. It was collapsed on the output side and blown out on regulator side. Here is the new pump with new 30R10 fuel line, saddlle clamps, fuel filter, and fuel sock. Also put a couple zipties to prevent possible wire chaffing. Was able to get it started, and warmed up, then reset TPS again, and set idle. Took for a 30 min ride and all is well. More power than its had the whole time Ive had it...even pulled front wheel off the ground > Thanks for all the great information on here, and look forward to possible riding with some other Buellys soon. |
