Hi everyone- desperate for some help troubleshooting this. My Firebolt starts and idles just fine and runs well in the lower rpms. On hot days at freeway speed (i.e. above 80 mph or so) it backfires almost constantly and stalls. The hotter it is outside, and the longer the wait to get through traffic and down the on-ramp, the worse the performance. Coasting to the side of the road, cycling the power, and restarting works just fine, until I get back up to speed and it does it again. If I drive more conservatively and keep the rpms down, it gets me home just fine, but if I wanted a nice slow ride I'd take my grandma's Buick.

I've replaced the plugs (they were due anyway.) The electrodes looked good, but there was a whole bunch of corrosion on the terminal on the front plug.

Also cleaned out the K&N filter and replaced a two year old battery that was starting to leak a little. It idles much better since, but not much improvement on the backfiring.

A helpful tech at the local HD/Buell wonders if it's a bad cam timing sensor.

They are right, it is more than likely the cam position sensor. Easy fix.

Thanks a bunch, Reepicheep. Just finished replacing the cam position sensor, and it runs like a new bike. I'll have to wait for a nice hot day to make sure, but so far it seems to be all better.
