so my throttle seems to be sticking to the bar a little bit when I twist. any recommendations for something between the plastic sleeve & chrome bar? seems like some sort of dry lube might be preferred... graphite? baby powder? | ||

Are you sure it's not the cables? Baby powder won't work because of the moisture. I'd try lock lube or bicycle hub grease if you're sure there's no kink or foreign matter in the sleeve. | ||

Cables does sound more likely, the throttle inside is like a nylon twister against the plastic housing. Anybody know what's the manual recommend as lube for the throttle twistgrip? | ||

Cables seem to work good with a graphite based spray lube and a silicone based spray lube for nylon type twist grips. This is my opinion. Grease attracts/holds dirt so it should normally be used in an enclosed area protected with seals in my opinion. Also is the cable worn or defective? If this is so, replacement is the only option. OH, also any grease will get thicker/tacky/sticky in cold weather. At least until it warms up. | ||

Graphite is the best option for cables. It's a dry lubricant. No winter sticking. No attracting dirt. | ||

it's not the cables for sure. I agree, grease or oil would attract crap and most likely make it worse.. | ||

WD40 It will repel water and keep a light protective/lubricating film on the handlebar under the throttle tube. Works warm or cold and won't attract crud like grease. | ||

it's not the cables for sure. Diagnosis method? I have NEVER seen a grip bind on the bar. Ever. The inner tube, the white plastic bit? Teflon. CAUTION - newer cables also have teflon lining!! Teflon reacts poorly with lots of lubricants - it "melts", pills, disintegrates, and binds up the cables. Make sure you know what cables you have, before you put ANY lube on them. | ||

yeah it comes & goes. I can hear and see the throttle jerking & grabbing the bar when turning. if that makes sense. prob has a lot to do with the humidity level I'm guessing. wd-40 i'll try! | ||

actually rat I've never seen this in all my years of riding, heck maybe i'll open it up and find something going on with the chrome or something. makes sense about the cable lubes though, I used some on the clutch cable and now it feels 'grippy'. like maybe I screwed it up by using cable lube on it lol | ||

Maybe take the switch pod apart and make sure the cables aren't worn and the plastic cam is clean and moving freely, slide the sleeve off the bar and wipe the inside out and the bar off. Wipe with a little Tri-flow, it's got teflon in it. I love the stuff, smells better than WD and and has worked great for a lot of my projects, including cables and chains on bicycles and motorcycles. | ||

I had an issue when my '99 was new with the cable tip hanging up on the groove it rides in on the twist grip - got stuck at 75% throttle and had to use the kill switch to pull over. Bicycle grease repels water but you should not need any lube if the sleeve is clean and the grip is not deformed. | ||

ok sticky grip update. removed the grip & found what at first looked to be chipped & peeling chrome turned out to be some random chunks of rubber or plastic. scraped it off with razor blade & polished the bar w/1000 grit. blew out the grip & re-installed. grip twists smooth. no lube added. problem solved! | ||

We use a squirt of TriFron (Gun Lube) between the handle bars and plastic tube. No gummy residue, dry Teflon lub YRMV | ||

sound's like it's time to pull apart & look. WD40 good stuff but more a cutting oil than a lube. |
