Hey guys, having some trouble with my 96 S1

Put it away for the season last year, I always run the fuel out of my machines when they sit for 6 months here, and the bike ran well when I put it away. I finally got some time off work, and got it out two weeks ago, and it started rough and was sputtering and coughing and just wouldn't run well at all without a ton of throttle and blipping.

Took it into the garage and thought I found the main reason was the rear cylinders intake was leaking (I could see some oil residue under it) ordered new gaskets and replaced both sides of the intake and the rubber gasket that holds the carb to the manifold. While it was off, I dipped the carb, cleaned all the jets with my wire set (ran wire through all the jets) put everything back together. Ordered a EZ adjust screw from CVP and put it back together, put new spark plugs in and let it rip.

Now it will start easy on full choke, the bike will run well once I get under way with the choke all the way in/off and I can ride on the highway with it off and everything works great until I left fully off the throttle and it will wind down really low and die. So basically I have to reach down and pull the choke out just a bit before I stop or it stalls.

I started with the EZ adjust idle screw set at 1 1/2 turns out. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference if I turn it in or out, but I can't tell because the bike won't idle without the choke.

The other odd part is when the bike was running correctly, it was always really cold blooded and would take a long time before I could push the choke in all the way, but once the bike warmed up if the choke was out all the way the rpms would climb to the mid 3k's. Now even when the bike gets warm the rpm's hold at about 2k. I checked all the intake for leaks by sparying starting fluid around them while the bike was running to see if the idle changed, but everything seems good.

If I push the choke in all the way, and lean on the throttle even a millimeter with my wrist the bike will hold its idle at 1500 but if I let go it dies.

So, do I need to check my pilot jet again, although I am sure with the dip, wire, compressor air and carb spray I got it clear...

Could my throttle cable be stretched just a bit? I have the idle setting turned ALL the way in so i don't think that could be it.

Someone said my diaphragm could be leaking air. How do I check that?

The only other odd thing I remember when I had the carb apart was, there was a area of indentation under the diaphragm cap off to the edge to the outside of the diaphragm that looked like maybe there should have been a small O-ring in there, but I didn't have one. Could that cause my issue?

Forgot to add that the bike does have a forcewinder intake and VH exhaust from the previous owner, but I have had the bike for 4or 5 years and has been issue free with the same jets I put back in after I cleaned the carb (basically I didn't change anything because it ran great before )

Take the top of the carb off and reseat the diaphragm. You have to wiggle it around real carefully when you're putting it on there.
If it's not seated right when you give it the gas it'll just fall on it's face.

Could be, but when I give it gas, it will lay rubber. Throttle response is great and it runs great as long as I'm on the throttle. With the choke in/off, As soon as I let go, the idle dips so low it stalls.

When you say 'idle screw' are you talking about the mixture screw, or the idle adjustment screw? 1.5 turns out sounds like the initial setting for the idle mixture screw, not the idle adjust screw. Sounds like you just need to raise the idle.

+1 on setting your idle rpm to 1050 hot.

Sorry, when I said "idle screw" I was talking about the idle mixture screw. 1.5 turns is where it is because that's where CVP's instructions said to start. The idle speed adjustment screw is bottomed out and screwed all the way in and the motor is still dying without any throttle with the choke all the way in.

Loosen and re-seat the intake seals, sounds like you either have an air leak or the throttle plate is not properly in contact with the idle mechanism.

Yep. I can make my S2 idle at 4000 rpm if I turn the screw in too far. Something's not put together correctly in the linkage.

Ok, figured it out. I took the intake off again and reseated the gaskets. Everything looked good though.

I put it all back together and started it with the same issue. I decided to unscrew the idle speed screw all the way out and as I did I heard a click about half way out. I looked and couldn't see anything out of the normal, I tried to start the bike with the idle speed screw all the way out (so very little throttle) and it wouldn't start (I figured it wouldn't but wanted to check everything) I then screwed the screw all the way in again and started the bike and the motor jumped to 4k rpms.... So I unscrewed it a bit toward the middle of the screw and it's now idling fine at 1500.

Best I can figure is when I put the carb back together, the screw for the idle speed was off center or something and wasn't even pushing on the arm it was suppose to and when I unscrewed it back out it popped back into place....

Who knows... This kinda goofy stuff always happens to me... Haha. Just glad the bike is running well again.
