Is installing a new one the only way to check it?
I'll need to get one, are these Buell specific or still available from HD?

You can test it with an oscilloscope (a $80 DSO Nano will do fine, that's what I used). I have a whole thread in the knowledge vault on how to do it and what it looks like good and bad.
That being said, it is the kind of part that can fail and that makes sense to keep tucked away as a spare on the bike, so if you buy one and it turns out you don't need it, not all is lost.
*That* being said, the stupid things are WAY too expensive from Harley, so it's an expensive thing to have sitting around as a spare. |

Thank you for coming down on Sunday.
Was good to have someone who knows Buells take a look at it.
Found a used bracket on eBay, ships tomorrow.
Will be getting Fuel Injection cleaner as well.
I'll let you know how it goes.

I just remembered what I was suppose to look up for you when I got home. The intake seals are part# 26995-86. Mine were only $6 pr. I seen on the "X1 files" that the date time was '00 for the updated primary tension shoe. Like I said that's something to do over the winter along with the other things in the primary. If you think your going to need help let me know and I'll make a trip back down. |

Got the throttle body bracket that was missing.
Unfortunately when I hold it against the face of the throttle body, the mounting points of the bracket are about 1/8" away from the mounting points on the cylinder head.
Doesn't seem right, should there be 1/8" spacers there? The parts manual doesn't show any. |

Bracket bolted up fine since the throttle body was slightly loose without it.
Throttle body cleaner took out a lot of gunk.
Added octane boost, pretty sure I used medium grade gas last time, someone on here said it would run a bit cooler.
No change, still running rough.
When I hold throttle steady at about 2500 rpm, starts to lose rpm by itself. |

Did you check if the rubber seal where the throttle body sits into is still in good shape?
And how about the intake seals? |

Replaced intake seals, smoother running, but still losing RPM.
Mighty_mouse suggested the exhaust seals, checked those, both front and rear were not tight, borderline loose in fact.
Tightened those up, immediately fixed the RPM loss.
Intense vibration proved to be the muffler vibrating in the two rear mounting straps which were slightly stretched out.
Added 1/32" gasket material under the straps to take up gap instead of re bending straps, instantly had less vibration/noise.
M_m also checked static timing, was good.
Tightened up timing chain while we were at it, was stretched to about almost 1" slop, now less than 1/2".
Have a list of winter items, especially the rear engine mounts.
Huge THANK YOU to Mighty_mouse for making multiple 3 hour trips (each way) to fix all those issues.
And to everyone on Badweb who had suggestions to troubleshoot this.
Thought I was going to miss the Toys for Tots run in Philly Nov 1st, but can now make it.

"Timing chain" (primary chain) don't worry we'll make a mechanic out of him someday....lol. Just doing my good deed for the day. Got alittle cold half way home on I 80. Was 44deg when I got home. I wish I could say I'm getting to old for this $hit but I love it too much. Keep in touch. |

M_m, your awesome X1 inspired me to go back to my Crossroads set up along with long levers.

Ibuprofen before long rides!
The only way I can load pictures are with my phone, computer never works.
Gotta crop them down at least 30% if possible.
They load that big every time.
Yes, Toys for Tots run was great, thousands of bikes, one Buell.

is there a known injector brand that fits the 1999 buell x1 lightening? mine have been cleaned, and one leaks, so want to replace them. |
