Hi all. Have been noticing lately that my 2007 Uly is having some difficulty when shifting from second to third. Its kind of a notchy feeling and it requires more input from me to do it. No issues with any of the other gears. Problem does not really exist when the bike is cold or if I wait for the revs to drop below 3000rpm. Only rears its head when its up to normal operating temp. Have adjusted the timing chain and clutch as per manual and use HD's finest trans oil. Any ideas guys and gals?

That sure sounds like a slightly tight primary chain. The manual recommends a range of adjustment, and it is not easy to do precisely. I'd suggest backing off the primary chain adjustment !/4 turn on the adjustment screw and see if that makes any difference.

Also try using redline shockproof transmission fluid for Harley. It really helps with the 2-3 shifts.

Thanks guys for your input. Will try backing off that adjuster as you have advised and see does it make any difference. I have only ever used HD Fluid in the primary. I normally run Motul 20w50 fully synth oil for the engine and I Harley guy I know advised me to try it in the primary. Wondering would this make any difference?

The true transmission fluids (like Sport Trans and Formula+) will make a noticeable improvement in shifting (in my experience), particularly as the oil ages.

(Good 20w50 engine oil will work in there though, just not as well and not for as long).

Using a transmission lube could ruin your stator. Be sure that the Redline is safe for the stator. I use Shockproof in my Harley and love it but I'm worried having it in the primary will cause stator damage.

I also have the same problem and then had my primary cover break the tangs for the clutch. Others that have had this happen report better shifting after it was repaired. I'm hoping this fixes my shifting problems.

I also use Motul 20w50 full synth for the engine, and also tried it for 10.000 km in the primary. Better and smoother shifting than the previous oil I changed from (also Motul, transgear or something), but I've now changed to HD Formula+. Wow. A real notable difference, MUCH smoother than the Motul gear or engine oil! For me it'll be HD Formula+ from here on in the primary.
