I have a 98 S3T with low miles that has a problem. Last Thursday, I had started it just fine and let it warm up for a bit. Then off to work and about halfway there it starts to cough and spit so I pulled over and kept trying to keep it running. It eventually quit as did everything - the lights shut off and there was nothing. A buddy came by with his booster pack and with that we could get it to crank a few times but not start. Everybody tells me I need a new battery and while that may be so, I think something else is amiss. Yesterday I put the new battery in (the old was 12 years old so it was time) and when I tried to start it fired right up. A quick check found that the brake light was intermittent with either hand lever or foot pedal. Then it would not work at all. Today I put a new bulb in as the other was definitely fried but still no brake light. When I measure the switch for the front brake, it shows an open when depressed but some continuity when it is at rest. This is opposite of what I expect so now I wonder if the brake light is on all the time and that is why I do not see any change when I try either the front or rear brake. I guess I should see the light get dimmer but I do not see anything. Being electrically ignorant is not helpful either. In any case, I think something is wrong somewhere. I have new front brake switch on order but this doe not address the rear brake light not coming on and I would find it odd that both switches would fail simultaneously. What do you folks think? |
