So I have been putting some seat time on my new to me buell. It has 7500 miles on it. I have some issues I would like to fix but wanted some good advice where to start as I am used to inline 4s. First off everytime I start the bike after sitting for awhile the clock resets to 1. Doesn't seem to be any charging issues as it turns over like a champ. Next, could be just me but when hot my buell idles high. It'll jump between 900-1300 RPMs while at a stop. I feel like it should be idling at 900-1000. It is equiped with race ecm from previous owner. Most important now, I get a cough or stutter while riding under 3000 RPMs inconsistently. IT comes right back but it feels like the bike is just gonna die, could be bad in a corner. Also stalls moving from a stop sometimes. I have read I should check intake seals, plugs wires, and plugs. anything else to look for? |

The clock re setting is due to the massive draw of battery power used to spin the starter past the first compression stroke. Most riders say this happens when there is insufficient voltage (a weak battery) or because of dirty connections at various places in the grounding path from the battery to the starter. Of course, it could be the positive path or both. I have a theory that there may be other forces at work here, namely sumping. If the crank case is full of oil, it will be much harder for the starter to turn over the engine. Could be a combination of weak battery and sumping. Anyway, just hit the starter button and if it doesn't spin over let off the button and try again. It will go after a couple of tries without re setting the clock. Clean those connections ASAP. A trickle charger is your friend. Your other issues are all symptoms typical of the bike needing a TPS re set. |

Putting "star" type lock washers on the battery bolts will help maintain good electrical contact and keep the bolts tight. |

Idle should be at 1100 rpms but most all of them jump between 900-1300, especially with the race ECM. And it is not uncommon for it to not idle down all the way at a stop. |

Oil staying in the crank is something I need to check. I even went so far as putting a time delay relay on my headlights (130 watts for me) which helped a little. But I still think I need new cables which I might do this summer. I have found that rocking the bike backwards a few times to get off of compression a little does work very well to prevent the clock from resetting. |

Concord NH? Sorry to threadjack, but I figured I'd let you know of the Adirondack Buell Rally going on in a few weeks in Lake George NY. It is only a few hours away from you, and will be a great time, plus if I remember, I'll have my ECM cable to do a reset for you. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/755417.html?1429988687 |

Ok so checked intake seals and no issues there. My ride home after doing so was horrible. Bike would hang around 2k rpms until motor was put under a load IE let clutch out while holding brakes. I luckily had a Buell customer come in who wanted me to make a pipe for his buell and he let me borrow his cable. Did a tps reset and its it much better now. rode it quite hard last night. My brother, ustorque, wanted to know what my AFV was and it is 125.8. He said it should be more around 100 and to hit the reset switch in ECMSpy. I am using the newer version and could not for the life of me find anything that would let me reset the AFV. |

Other than the Race ECM, does it have any exhaust or intake modifications like an aftermarket or modified stock exhaust? 125 is high, assuming everything is right and it has a proper tune it should typically be around 100%. Yours is enrichening the mixture by 25.8%, you are likely smelling unburnt fuel and crappy fuel economy. |
