I dont know Blake, at 180 mph I doubt there is enough of a tailwind anywhere to push a bike an extra 25mph. Sounds real far fetched to me. |

If he was running nitrous that would have done it. |

Have to admit 205 looks great in the headlines. LOL Heck, Let the courts be lenient with him and knock it down to 150. Let's see, that's about six month's in the slammer, eh? |

the only way he could hit a 205 mark is if he has a 2 nitrous right beside it and some modified internal parts so I think that person that clocked the bike is on crack and I think they will do anything just to be in the spotlight as the good person so I what that person should've did is slow down give them the finger and whack the throttle..... |

Greg, Assuming that gearing and rev limit are not limiting peak speed. What limits the top speed of a motorcycle, meaning what causes the bike to stop accelerating? Answer: Aerodynamic drag. How much does aerodynamic drag increase with air speed? Answer: Drag goes up proportional to speed squared, so if speed doubles, drag increases four-fold. So let's compare the aerodynamic drag for a bike traveling at 205 mph in still air, one traveling at 205 mph with a 25 mph tail wind, one traveling at 180 mph in still air, and one traveling at 180 mph into a 25 mph head wind. Drag is proportional to the wind speed (air speed) squared so we will compare the different scenarios on that basis to find their relative magnitudes... 205 mph through still air: 2052=42,025 205 mph with a 25 mph tail wind: (205-25)2=32,400 180 mph through still air: 1802=32,400 180 mph into a 25 mph head wind: (180+25)2=42,025 Notice anything interesting? |

Math is making my head hurt tonight Besides that the point is moot since this guy was on an RC51....no way in hell is that bike seeing 180 much less 200..even with a tailwind. |

RC51???205MPH is alot to ask out of a bike thats a 118HP and its quarter mile time are just and I mean just a barely out of the 11's.Its gonna need more then a tail wind. |

Having read this thread a couple of times I have come to the conclusion that no matter how fast he was/wasn't going he is in deep do-do. |

Human error is huge here. So from an airplane the cop times, by hand with a stopwatch, the bike between the quarter mile white lines on the highway and comes up with 4.39 seconds. Thus, 4.39 seconds * 4 = 17.56 seconds to go one mile. 3,600 seconds (1 hour)/17.56 = 205 mph. The more excited the cop is to hit stop on his stopwatch, the faster the speed. Following are 1/4 mile times in 10th of a second and their corresponding speeds. 4.39 = 205 MPH 4.49 = 200 MPH 4.59 = 196 MPH 4.69 = 192 MPH 4.79 = 188 MPH 4.89 = 184 MPH 4.99 = 180 MPH 5.09 = 177 MPH 5.19 = 173 MPH 5.29 = 170 MPH 5.39 = 167 MPH 5.49 = 164 MPH 5.59 = 161 MPH 5.69 = 158 MPH 5.79 = 155 MPH 5.89 = 153 MPH 5.99 = 150 MPH |

The terminal speed is a moot point. The officer will cite him for everything possible. The lawyers will will wheel and deal. The courts will filter it. The insurance company will nail him to the wall. He is gonna rack up some serious points and no way to hide it either. |

What an idiot. I don't know of ANY roads short of salt flats capable of getting up to 200+ mph in everyday riding areas. And one more thing... If he's doin 200 and the cop is at a stand still, that means he has covered a HALF A MILE by the time the cop has even reached up to put the car in gear. He could have turned ANYWHERE along that road and vanished. he he. good one! |

IF the cop had not ever CLOCKED anything that fast before... how accurate can he be, even if he is a "professional"?? I'd like to see an article come out by the Associated Press showing all the faults of this case... If COBY didn't do it... neither did this guy and neither did OJ. What exactly did each do, that is a different story~ seems everyone enjoys reading. |

The AM TV news covered the story today. They said the officers plane would only do 111 mph. I would question the accuracy of the officer clocking a bike that is moving away from him at 94 mph (205 -111). Let alone if the bike was doing 30 or 40 mph faster than the plane. The jail time will most likely save the kids life for the short term. I think you use your luck up real fast at those kinds of speeds. You know don't ride faster than your guardian angel can fly! |

Thing is; if his lawyer can insert any doubt about that speed reading, it could get the case thrown out of court. Never mind the plane, speed differential and officer timing. Bring in a dyno sheet and a few calculations proving that there is *no way* that bike could have been traveling at that speed. Case closed. Henrik |

Even with the speed factor thrown out there is still the lack of license and reckless aspect of the ticket. Not to mention all the publicity this case is generating and what sort of message a judge may want to send out to the general public. |

And I'm just guessing, but once the press tracks down the kid's dad I think the dad will be laying low and staying somewhat quiet on the issue. Reporter: "Officer, what is your opinion of kids and young unlicensed riders speeding on the highways that you patrol?" Officer: "No comment" Reporter: "But officer, you must have some opinion since it was your kid who is involved" Officer: "No comment" Reporter: "Then just answer me this, what is the highest recorded speed that you've issued a speeding ticket for?" Officer: "Look in the record books down at the county courthouse, other than that - no comment" |

It really matter exactly what speed the rider was going. The speeding ticket is the least of this guys problems. In most states if your going faster than double the posted speed limit you can be arrested for Reckless Driving. So forget about 205mph, if he`s goes 120 mph or more they`ll hit with Reckless Driving, then tack on Reckless Endangerment and Disorderly Conduct. Throw in Entering in Speed Contest/Racing too, these are all Misd. Criminal Court Offences, not traffic violations. Then comes the traffic violations for which he is eligible for atleast six summons. Plus getting his bike towed, Impounded, Storage Fees, and Vouchered as Arrest Evidence until the trial. Oh and Bail money too! He`s gonna need a Lawyer and i hope he gets a nice Judge. This could end up costing him Ten Grand easy by the time its all done. |

I just read the thread in the QB about speeds and 130mph. seems a few of us like to stretch our legs out a little. personally, i think 205 is a little optimistic. what i do know is that, even though you might not see any cops, or think the road is clear, LOOK UP FIRST!!!!! Ken |

You guys would all like it in the UK! Apparantly if you pass through a GATSO (UK Speed radar trap), at over 168mph, your too fast for the second photo and the ticket won't be issued! Quality! Now all you have to do is outrun those new coppers on their R1's. Yes i'm serious! Northern biker police have been issued with the buggers to keep up with us. Pants |

Motorcycle World Abuzz at Minnesota Biker's 205 Mph Ticket; Some Disapprove, Others Doubt The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS Sept. 26, 2004 — People across the country are shaking their heads over the kid ticketed for allegedly riding his motorcycle at 205 mph some out of disapproval, other because they doubt he went that fast. Ever since a State Patrol pilot clocked Samuel Armstrong Tilley's 2002 Honda RC51 going a quarter-mile in 4.39 seconds on Sept. 18, people in chatrooms, garages and biker bars from Sturgis, S.D., to Los Angeles have been buzzing about the alleged feat on Highway 61 near Wabasha. "Certainly anyone who flouts the law to that extent is seen by some as a latter-day Robin Hood, flying in the face of authority and doing stuff we all want to do but common sense stops us from," said David Edwards, editor-in-chief of Cycle World, a magazine based in Newport Beach, Calif. Edwards is among the many experts who doubt Tilley's bike could have gone so fast. "More likely, the cop with the stopwatch had an itchy trigger finger," he told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. "There are lots of guys who have been spending a lot of money and a lot of years at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah trying to join the official 200 Club and most still haven't done it," Edwards said. He said Tilley's bike would have needed an add-on turbo charger to go above 165 mph. State Patrol pilot Al Loney, a 27-year veteran, and his superiors stand by their report. Tilley, who graduated from Stillwater High School last year, hasn't returned numerous calls seeking comment. He's due to appear in Wabasha County Court on Oct. 25. Tilley purchased his motorcycle last summer from Tousley Motorsports in White Bear Lake, where he once worked. Tousley President Larry Koch said Tilley is a nice guy, "but I really want to ask him: 'What in the hell were you thinking?'" |

Read the sportbikes net link from the rider. I suspect there will be a pre-trial motion to settle on lessor charges with the local D.A. Now just wait until next year when the rider gets a new vainty plate: 205MPH. |
