I picked up a 98 S1W and had to do intake seals on it. its been sitting for quite a while. I got it from a friend and he got it running after sitting for about 6 years, but the seals leaked so i replaced them after i got it. its been sitting again over the winter and i've never actually started it up. I went to start it yesterday after charging the battery and putting fresh fuel in and it wont turn over. Headlight is bright, but doesn't seem to dim when i hit the start button. seems like its getting power to the starter according to my test light. looks like nothing was left unplugged. Any help would be appreciated. thanks |

Kill switch in "run" position? Starter switch contacts could be corroded. |

yes Hughlysses the switch is in the run position, but it acts just like its not. my next thing was going to pull that apart and see if there was a bad connection or broken wire |

It's in neutral, yes? |

Kickstand, clutch, and/or neutral switches? The previous owner bypassed all of them on my S1 |

Double check that small wire spade connector on the back of the starter. Mine has vibrated off a couple of times before I tightened up the connector a bit. |

Check the neutral and sidestand safety switches...and give the starter a whack with a hammer. Sometimes the solenoids stick. |

Check your fuse box sockets for corrosion. |

What Rat said!!Hit with hammer. The contacts inside solenoid take a beating and corrode. |

If it was bad contacts, he'd still hear a click as the solenoid actuates. Now, if it was actually stuck, that's something else, but I think there would be enough current draw to notice...the headlight would probably get a bit dimmer. OP says nothing happens at all. So it's most likely a bad connection somewhere, or a safety interlock switch. What happens when you try starting it with the clutch lever pulled in? |
